Cheese with Christmas cake

There's a girl in the office, who has very kindly brought in a Christmas cake (containing a whole bottle of brandy too apparently) for us all. Along with the cake are 2 blocks of Cheshire cheese to have with the cake.

I'm baffled. I've never come across this in 33 years. Have any of you?

Yep, but we usually have Wensleydale with it, or Lancashire.

Ah, so it's not that unheard of. Yes, she is from Yorkshire and I am just a simple Nottingham lad.

Yes every year I have a small christmas cake and a strong cheese, this we always had to my wifes disgust, as she is Welsh she does'nt understand.Bless her.

Wensleydale and "spice cake" (as they call it in parts of God's Own County) boggled me the first time too. But it is bloody amazing.

Yes! Although I don't live there now I come from, and my parents are still in Wensleydale and yet they are Lancastrians!

this discussion couldn't be nicer, lived in GB for a while and left with a little overweight due to things you've just described, yummy, loved it! I'm American and Yorkshire dishes are better than our marsh mellow cream. Saying this is really an insult for some of my folks but I can't help it.

Heard of it but never tried it.

After years of hating it, suddenly this year I've got into blue cheeses. I'm like a crack we for Blacksticks Blue, but without the side benefit of being thin.

I'll definitely be trying the cheese/cake combo.

My Dad is originally from Yorkshire and whenever we go up to visit his part of the family over christmas there's copious amounts of cheese produced around the cake. Think he's too embarrassed to do it at home though, mutterings of "soft southerners"..

yup cheese and cake seems to be a very yorkshire thing but it really can work well as said a lovely bit of Wensleydale is just the ticket i do like the Wensleydale cheddar too
