I was up in Milton Keynes on Sunday - doing an hours skiing at the SnoZone with some friends before a drink & a bit of food.
Before leaving Milton Keynes to return to Sussex I looked at the sky - Fluffy white clouds with Blue patches - Hmmm I thought I can take the roof off.
Driving down the M1 just before the M25 it started to drizzle and spit with rain - not really a problem as the traffic was moving and the rain just went over the top.
Going around the M25 it continued on and off do the same thing - but the traffic kepts moving so it is still not a problem (In fact I spotted an MG & BMW convertible both with their tops down as well).
I got to the roadworks where they are widening the M25 to 45+ lanes (The M4-M3ish bit) and I went through the contraflow bit ....
Then it happened, the skies opened, a deluge!! a torrential downpour!!!!
I could hardly see the car in front ! In fact I could hardly see my own windscreen let alone what is beyond it!!
Lack of visibility and huge amounts of standing water caused the traffic to slow to a crawl!!
Being in the contraflow I couldn't even pull off the motorway to put the roof on - I had 15 or so minutes of getting very very very wet !!
It was made all the more galling as I could see the weather front and the clear blue skies beyond it a few miles to the south !!

I just remembered tanking down a motorway on a club day out. Others with me had the good sense to put their lids up before we got onto the motorway. Nah, not me of course, yep it p*ssed down but while I could do 70mph I was OK, it just went over the top. My good pals decided enough was enough and pulled in to the place they should'nt. No way was I stopping I would get drenched. Their faces when I bombed past, thought I was crazy.

Not only soaked but a hurt head.
I think you got to the crux of it, I could see the big black clouds as I came around the M25, but I could also see the clear blue beyond it to the south. Basically you enter denial and tell yourself that you can make it - you won't get caught!

I had the dubious pleasure a few months ago to be running side-by-side with a Police motorcyclist on the M4. Unfortunately for both of us, the heavens opened and it snowed for all its might!!! I had the roof off and poor BiB on the bike couldnt see a sausage either....
Not much we could do other than press on as the weather did clear. However, the knowing glance from one pissed-off person to another was worth the freezing moment. In the end he did shake his head....

Ahh yes,when it rains here in the summer monsoon season it really rains. I got caught a while a go in a torrential rain storm. We are talking about 6 inches of rain in a few hours. It was up to the sills inside the car. when I eventually got home I had to drill holes in the floor pan to let the water out.

Got caught out in the same way on the way up to Silverstone a few years back. The heavens opened and a deluge which could accurately be described as of "biblical proportions" came down. However, as has been said already, if you can keep it over 45mph then the rain goes straight over the top.
I found myself laughing out loud, to be honest. It was a hoot.

Bad luck. I had a similar shocker about 10 years ago.
Was driving the country lanes on the north side of the M25 one sunday afternoon when the heavens opened.
Managed to dive out and do the 'speed roof' thing in a driveway but then the car misted up so had to drive with the windows down to maintain visibility.
Turn onto the main road to be faced with a huge flooded section of road.
I suddenl noticed the mondeo heading towards me into the flood has no intentions of slowing down and I still had the windows down.!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Has anyone ever noticed how slow the Griff windows are to go up? Well I really noticed it that day.
Mondeo gets along side, throws up a 6 foot wall of muddy water and my window is only half up.
Me, the dash, the seats, the entire inards of the car are soaked in filthy drainage water.
Nice.
Nowadays, I keep an extra large golf umbrella down beside the passenger sill. When it rains and I am in traffic the umbrella covers the entire roof area and saves having to dive out and get the lid.

Hurriedly pulling up under a far too narrow bridge, out of the boot came the couple of holdalls, camera bag, tool kits, bag of spares, 3 months supply of baby food, fax machine, Gabby’s play gym, then finally the roof panel! By the time I got back in the car with the roof on, it had stopped raining and I was like a bedraggled dog. But I was laughing!"

Another one from last year I've just remembered.
Sitting at lights in North London, roof off, and it starts to rain.
Chap in a SLK sitting next to me, called over that I ought to get a decent car as he pushed the button to bring his electric roof up.
Obviously, one was slightly upset at recieving abuse from the driver of a Fanny Wagon but this annoyance was abated when I heard a loud clunk and saw his roof stop moving and jam while half up.
Lights went green but I just sat there next to him laughing and soaking up the moment.
One of life's little treats.

Ahh - I think I went one step further on stupidity. I similarly did the roof off thing on the M4 on Sunday, got back to London about 2 ish. beautiful sky - changed into shorts, t-shirt and went for a long walk down the river, stopped at the pub, enjoyed a pint - looked out of the window - heavens had opened. Only thing was - car was back at home with the roof off. Legged it back to find a very unhappy chim. Felt very stupid as people watched me struggle in the rain to put the roof on and Leven cover on top whilst they were chickling to themselves "hehehehe - little bit late mate".....

Reckon I was there around 4:30ish on Sunday - glad to hear I wasn't alone in my predicament!
Quite frankly I didn't mind the rain - it was the simple fact I could see sod all that really got to me!

I haven't seen you out and about on your mountain bike recently but did see you in the Tiv the other day. Any more clues as to who owns the brown

Went to see the Lanc bomber fly over a local res(anniversary of dam busters raid) expected 2-300 cars.
When I got there it was gridlock .Jumped out the car in a hurry and ran for the best view I could get.
Fantastic sight, So i get back to the car.........house keys in pocket,car keys in boot.
Rang for RAC, Sit in car whilst 2000 people drive slowly by, Heavens open....big time.
Not only wet (roof in boot ,coat in boot, tools in boot,umbrella in boot.) but also have to suffer the indignity of all those people wondering what the hells he doing?
Its so embarrassing i can`t believe i shared it with you.
