Wanted to relate a recent tale of potential significant woe regarding my Viper. Was driving the car to take it to Wallace Performance to get it's MOT. As I was going thro' Westhill I noticed a rhythmic knocking coming from the back end, especially coming off throttle. Also a speed related grinding noise as I pulled up to a stop. I'd not long had a new diff fitted in the car and my first thought was that it had failed or not been fitted properly. But no, the guys at Wallace found one wheel nut missing and two bolts sheared off on rear left wheel!!! There was apparently a massive amount of play in the wheel. Very lucky not to lose it!!! It would appear that the apparently highly respected establishment that fitted the diff didn't torque up the wheel nuts fully!!! Sort of lost for words!

Crazy, it's things like this that lead me to now do everything myself, had too many bad experiences and don't trust ANY garage in/around Aberdeen with my p+j.

Lucky you didn't loose a wheel!

Last time i used a large garage the dumbf##ks jacked up my van on it's sill. Not what you want on a van that wasn't even a year old. Unfortunately i didn't notice at the time, so couldn't really do much about it. If it had been the S4 i'd have probably went down with a big stick.
That is now why i would only use a specialist and someone who treats your car like it was their own. Find a small independant specialist that does the work himself and not some inexperienced young mechanic who just wants to rag your car. I use SP Autobahn and would recommend them to anyone for Central area. Glad your wheel didn't come off.

I would't go and blame the garage without hard facts. There is a craze going about where the youngsters get a kick out of loosing off wheels nuts just for a laugh. Yea some laugh. If I ever catch one I will post graphic details of aftermarth

The car's been locked up in my garage since the diff was fitted had it. There's no way anyone could have been near it. It had done less that 100 miles since the diff was fitted. These guys are allegedly specialists aswell... rolleyes

It hasn't had new wheels at the same time? (nuts can loosen significantly as the wheels 'break in'). Big thermal changes can also cause them to loosen.

Personally I always re-torque wheel nuts myself after doing 50 miles or so. Also re-check after trackdays etc.

I have a habit of checking after every run be it hills or sprint.

No new wheels, no big swings in temperature. Just a diff fitted by an allegedly reputable establishment. Also, when I picked up the car, the rear view mirror was hanging off and the wires from the ECU to the back of the WBL AFR had been pulled out and not replaced. Whether or not the diff was fitted well or the wheel nuts were torqued properly, still a shoddy job. Won't be going back there again and others can make their own mind up...

This happened to me a few weeks ago.
Changed the wheels myself and definitely tightened as much as a I could. And about a week later started to get the same kind of knocking and screeching sound.

Jacked the car up the following day to find a few of the nuts were loose! Guessing another few days and it may have been a disaster!

Who me ?

Have had this with my alloys .Got new tyres fitted off the vehicle cheap ,and put wheels back on my self .Checked them myself a couple of days later to find them loose . Never torqued them as my torque wrench was playing up .Borrowed one ,torqued to correct value ,no more problems .
But the spectre of tyre places overtightening is still with us .First pair of front tyres I had fitted at a tyre place ,they tightened by hand ,then went to torque .Their chart said VAG group 120 ft lb . So quick look in handbook -result 120 NEWTON METRES ( somewhere about 90 ft lb) .Red faces all round .

Fair enough. Hopefully you get some recourse from the original garage.
I assume new studs and nuts for that wheel now.

I had a similar experience from a garage down south, bad knocking, pulled over to find 2 out of 5 bolts missing and 3 very very loose. frown
