Hi,
I recently had an offer from Leeds of 32k and hoping to get an offer of 40k from slough subject to my medical report.

Leeds offer came through recruitment agency yesterday and i told the guy that i am waiting for other offer from slough and i am looking for 34k for Leeds role. There isn't any benchmark set for this role in leeds but other recruitment agencies are advertising this same role up to 37k.

Guy from recruitment agency told me that he won't negotiate the salary on my behalf until i am 100% sure that i want this job.

Slough job offer would be confirmed in 7 days time as company has requested my medical report from my GP. They are only willing to pay up to 40k but they might go little higher than that but it is not confirmed yet. For me it’s difficult to live in Maidenhead (travel to slough) on 40k with a family and two kids because of high living cost.

What i personally want is to have both offers on table with the exact salary package companies are willing to pay and then i would weight up everything b/w two jobs.

Should I ask the company in slough about their final offer because guy in recruitment agency is telling me to make a final decision quickly as leeds firm can’t wait that long?
OR
Should i go back to recruitment agency and tell them that i need 35k for leeds jobs and meanwhile if I get more than 40k from slough then reject the LEEDS offer? I know it doesn’t seem very professional but I don’t know what to do?

Role in Slough:

Pros: People are nice, good job security as I will be a only one in development, good bonus package and benefits including company’s contribution pension. Not too much pressure work environment and i can easily adjust in their company enviorment.

Cons: Need to relocate (in maidenhead), No team work environment, high living cost in maidenhead. I might get bored of this job in 3yrs time or might stay with them for longer period of time.

Role in Leeds:

Pros: People are okay; more work to do, benefits are okay including Stake holder pension. No need to relocate as it’s near my home. Team work environment.

Cons: Don’t know about job security;

- Contribution Pension = 5% (even if i don't pay anything)
- 25 Holidays
- Paid certification training courses

I would be inclined to reply to the recruitment agent, 'I tell you what, make it £37k as per similar roles in the area, and I'll accept it'.

That does depend on which job you actually prefer, but to me the pros of the Leeds job plus the fact you won't need to relocate would edge me towards that role, if the overall package was good enough. It would take a serious job offer to make me contemplate relocating, and £8k may not quite do it for me (similar salary situation as you).

If you're comfortable with doing so, then tell (lie to) the recruitment agent that the other company has responded with an offer of £40k and a more attractive package, so unless the other company come up a bit then there is no incentive for you.

Company in Slough might be able to offer me b/w 42k - 44k as i did mention to them very clearly that 40k is not enough for me and my family to live in south/west but i need wait 4-5 days before i hear from them.

What's with the obsession to live in Maidenhead if the job's in Slough?

If the role in the south does not have a relocation package then the associated costs and risks would be too great for me if I were in your situation. Any salary differential would easily be eroded by such relocation and associated costs.

Firstly, well done.

Secondly, you have proven to yourself that you can get job offers (uncertainty with Leeds future) if the worst should happen 'oop north.

If for a minute you put salary, benefits, etc out of the equation - which role do you really want AND you can only choose one.

Now factor in family and their needs and wants - is it still the same choice?

Lastly add in benefits and does your decision change?

Finally, you can start to look at monies and negotiating.

If you saw the Leeds roles at £37K you should have requested same/similar - hindsight is a great thing banghead . You can (now) also agree highest salary at Slough subject to satisfactory medical - which does not help you with the pressure from the Leeds job but at least you know the "top out figure" of Slough. The real fly in the ointment is if the Slough representative will agree the figure without the final medical report.

It is a tough one - only you can decide if money is the most important factor in this scenario.

Maybe this?

I live in Maidenhead and used to work in Slough. There is a train line between the two, and no where in Sluff I would like to live.

So if slough decide to let you go after 6 months doe whatever reason, how much will you be down relocation wise? will you be selling a house in leeds? based in the ones near me some are still for sale after 3 years some 2 and one has just sold, was up for about a year and a half.

Is it really worth relocating your kids and wife from all their friends for a couple of £k a year which you will spend on rent/mortgage and eating out etc, etc?

It is really tough becuase i am not good in making decisions, but i would go for Slough (even though i don't like south/west) just becuase i know i would easily adjust within the company and also people are very nice to work with but i do a concerns about work load bcz i might get bored of this job in 3 yrs time and they don't have many projects to develop in the future.

For leeds job, i don't have to relocate and living cost is low and there will be a more work to do in the company which will keep me bzy and motivated. But job security would be a question mark in leeds job.

We don't have many friends here in north so its not a big issue. If the company in slough makes me an offer of 43k+ then i will be in good position to accept the offer.

I am renting a property at the moment and will do the same if i relocate.

Its a good question but if i get a £400 per month extra after all expenses then i think its worth taking a job in slough.

Also from April 2012, i will be losing £200 per month from my child tax credit if i stay on 25k job which i didn't realise before.

I'm in a similar situation at the moment - though both jobs are around London. Obviously it's harder if you have a family in tow but i'm going for the role with the most longevity, whatever that means in your industry/role/situation. Won't get fooled again on worrying about £X00 or so a month i.e. do what makes you happiest for the future .. sounds like Sloff in your situation. If you're renting then that should make things a little easier.

Slough is pretty much commutable from anywhere along the M4 corridor. You'll find housing cheaper the further west you go. Slough is on the FGW mainline also so train is an option.

The additional point is that in the SE, jobs are much more in abundance, plus the option of contracting may be easier to get into if you want to go that way.

The South East is a pretty crappy place to live though. Vastly overcrowded, money-obsessed, socially fragmented, long commutes, stupidly expensive. You get a lower quality of life AND you pay through the nose for it.

Having grown up in London I have no idea why anyone would move there by choice, people seem so bloody miserable all the time having done so.
