Slow Mo

I'm interested in shooting some slow motion, preferably HD video and wondered if people had any suggestions? I think Casio did a little point and shoot that can do 1000fps, but I don't imagine the quality to be any good (although, only 150 notes or so).

Any ideas?

How slow? How many frames a second do you want to capture, what quality (HD = 720i,p, 1080P?)

1080p would be ideal, but could live with 720i/p

I have no idea on the number of frames per second to be totally honest! Just want to play and experiment.

Any advice on fps?

Well 720p at 60fps will give you about 2.5 seconds for every 1 if played back at 24fps..

Really depends on what you want.

I'm happy to be corrected, but I don't think you'll find anything affordable capable of HD quality and a useful frame rate for good slo-mo (<1000fps+).

The sensors in video cameras usually achieve a higher frame rate at the expense of resolution. As the frame rate goes up, the resolution goes down. The Casio cameras can do 1000fps but at less then SD resolution.

You can rent high speed cameras such as the Olympus or Phantom, but even then you'd be looking at a significant amount of money.

I regularly have need for this spec in my work, but it also requires a lighting rig that make the sun look like a 40 watt bulb...

Pah, I had a play with a million FPS imaging system the other day. Only does B&W and low low res and still not fast enough to view an electrical spark discharge. 1 frame nothing, next frame, its happened. Sad thing is, theres even imaging systems that can do 3 billion, yes billion, frames per second. And even they won't capture it properly.


OP, its not HD, but if you can find a Casio EX-F1, this will do up to 1200 fps at a small resolution or something like 300 fps at a rather decent resolution. Its a quirky Bridge camera with a super zoom lens and only 6 MP sensor. Its also more expensive now that it was when it was released and they've never bothered with a follow up as far as I can tell. Just youtube or google Casio EX-F1 videos, there are plenty about.

A mate does SlowMoGuys on youtube with a Phantom. Seriously expensive bits of kit, to achieve 1000fps at 1080p. It'll do 10,000fps at 640x480 if you wish.

Also, its been said, lighting is key, you're looking at 10's of thousands of watts if filming inside on a high fps.

Only if you want a 4000fps effect, which might be what the OP wants.

No good if you want to analyse what's actually happening.

Thought I'd share this with you. This was shot on a Casio at 420fps and gives you a good idea of quality vs. speed. HD it isn't, but it's good enough to see what's going on in reasonable detail.
