Recommend me a mandoline slicer
Discussion
Hi all,
There seem to be dozens of these on amazon at various price points - does anyone own one they'd recommend at around the £30 mark or less?
All I really want it for is julienning carrot, celeriac etc for Asian-style marinated salads and spring rolls. Grating is too coarse and I am far too kack-handed to slice julienne just with a knife.
A blade for slicing potatoes for dauphinoise would be a bonus but isn't essential.

I have also been looking for one recently. No first hand experience, but from reviews all over the web, i've chosen the Swissmar Borner V-slicer to order http://www.amazon.co.uk/Swissmar-Borner-V-1001-V-S...
This is the one I've got. It's great - works a treat and didn't break the bank.
We don't use it enough at the pub to justify a costly one (and every chef I know breaks things, so it's best to buy cheap & often rather than expensive & often!!)
Edit to add the link!

If you want a full size frame affair, then the Nisbets item as listed above is a great piece of kit, but quite bulky.
I also have one of these that I use if I want to knock up a quick dauphinoise, to be honest I gets more use than the Vogue item...

I have one of these. Now listen very, very carefully. Never and I repeat Never decide it is ok to use this bit of kit without the safety guard. That last bit of carrot - throw it away if it won't slice - do not use just your hand to finish the slicing. They are very very sharp and blood doesnt look good over your food. What the Japanese don't know about thinly slicing things isn't worth knowing.

Mine is still sharp after a decade of frequent use. It's a kinda magic.

There are thicky and thinny serrated blades that came with it, but am insufficiently posh to do Julian.
Downside is that the guard is pretty small, the ones linked above seem safer.
Funnily enough the Borner V-slicer is linked below as a google ad for £28.99, including free shipping and a free grater:

Job jobbed I think.

When it arrives treat it with the same respect you would a TVR in the wet or it'll bite you very hard.
And yes I am speaking from experience.
Don't worry - I learned a very painful lesson trying to get that last bit of Parmesan using a Microplane grater. Thankfully blood doesn't show on pizza. And yes I am speaking from experience.
