Sloppy, non-solid food
Discussion
Hi all,
Unfortunately got my jaw horrifically broken earlier in the week, and so am unable to eat any solid food for SIX WEEKS! I need you, the ever reliable PH culinary collective, to get me through this period of foodie hell without going insane!
I have just bought myself a shiny new blender (every cloud...), so am now sorted in that respect, but what to make for main meals are my issue.
Ideas I've had for meals and dessert are:
- Shepherd's/cottage pie
- Mashed potato
- Meal replacement shakes
- Yoghurt
- Cottage cheese
- Smoothies
- Enchiladas/burritos, blended
- Chili con care, blended
- Soup (which I am not a huge fan of, unfortunately)
- Creme caramel
- Custard
Any help is much appreciated during this gruesome time!
TIA,
HH

Sounds miserable!
On the soup side try a big pot with fresh (cheap) tomatoes with plenty of seasoning from your local market. 1 clove of garlic, an onion, peppers, a grated carrot and a stock cube. Don't go for all this rubbish about taking the skins off- just put it through a colander.

How did it happen if you don't mind me asking?
I'd be making delicious dhal dishes:
Red lentils
Finely diced onion, garlic, ginger
Cumin
Coriander
Chilli
Turmeric
Fenugreek
Black onion seed/kolonji/Nigella seed
Fennel seed
Mustard seed
Chicken stock
Butter
Fry off the solids, add the spices and cook off, then add the lentils and stock and cook, stirring until soft and the right consistency. Adjust seasoning, add butter or cream to enrich.
Hope that helps and I wish you a speedy recovery.

I've not eaten solid food since I had my upper teeth removed in July so have some understanding of how you're feeling. It's important to have a positive attitude, re your inability to chew, and be inventive. Soups get very boring after a while
I found the main problem for me was not wanting to eat because it was difficult and turning to alcohol instead. I soon learnt the error of my ways
I bought a hand blender recently so I could puree carrots easily. Use your tongue against the roof of your mouth to squash soft fruit ie bananas, raspberries etc. Frozen peas, once cooked, are easy to swallow without chewing. Mashed potatoes with melted cheese is comforting - Cauliflower cheese is great - broccoli florets are easy...don't bother with the stalks.
Fish is good - pasta bakes and anything which is soft/easy to swallow without chewing likewise.

Cranacken. It's a lovely dessert.
Nigel slater has a good recipe.
