Ok, I'm sure there have been numerous Best Song for Driving threads but how about one that matches songs/albums to certain imaginary drives, in any era, in any car. So I've got...

Born to Run and you're instantly at the wheel of a 70s Buick racing to get to the State line before midnight.

Moon Safari by Air and you're wafting south across the Millau Bridge in a Citroen SM.

Keep on Running by the Spencer Davis Group and you're in a Cooper S zipping round Swinging London.

Sweet Home Alabama and you're running 'shine in a Stepside Chevy pick-up in, well, Alabama.

Opus No1 by the Tommy Dorsey Band and you're hightailing it to Manhattan in a Deusenburg for a night on the tiles.

I Get Around and you're in a Woody heading down to Malibu beach, board on the roof.

Anything by Coldplay and your stuck in traffic on your boring commute. In the rain. In February. In Slough.

Not at all - it's a good one. Rules are for folk without imagination...

'Airbag' by Radiohead.

Perfect from a standing start - then a serious drive.

The tune?

The Good Life by Tony Bennett

Driving this:

Around Monte Carlo, then parking up here:

And feeling pretty smug.

Then I wake up.

This will sound odd but bear with me...

"I drove all night" by Cyndi Lauper + a McLaren F1

The Scene

A warm August morning at 2am at a service station off the E451 just north of Darmstadt, Germany. The tanks have been filled to the brim and a quick check of the tires has been done.

Pulling down the door, and turning the ignition to on, the first bars of the song fill the cabin as you pull away from the forecourt.

The beginning is quite slow but with an underlying tempo that suggests things will change [which will suit the moment as you drive down to the entrance point to the autobahn.

As the song increases in tempo, you drive down the ramp and join the darkened autobahn, largely devoid of traffic.

Gently accelerating, you settle the car down, shift around in the seat, re-adjust hands on the steering wheel, check the instruments and ahead and behind for traffic as that most beloved of signs appears......

Cyndi is now in full swing as you bury the accelerator and the speedo winds around with increasing speed, the roar of the engine and induction note pausing briefly only as you select the next gear and the nearly 2 mile straight ahead appear through the forested area, the centre divider a wall of trees and bushes with only you and the road and no-oncoming lights.

150kph, 200kph, 250kph, 300kph....the car is absolutely flying and hugging the road. Conscious of the upcoming bend, it is a balance between speed and time left to brake. Gently lifting off, the car slows to around 200kph as the next bend is taken...letting it settle down again on the second straight, the accelerator is buried again and pushed back into the seat. The overpasses on this section fly by with increasing speed as 300kph is reached and passed. Signs indicate an exit a few miles ahead and you slow to take it at a more sensible speed, indicating right and crossing the overpass.

Of course, it would be a shame not to select "track repeat" as you take the other ramp back down, this time heading south to where you started.

:-)

If anyone knows that section of road just north of Darmstadt as you head towards Frankfurt, you will have a better idead

Driving this:

That's such a good call!

I used to love autumn in the TVR Tuscan and blasting out "Long Misty Days" by Robin Trower - it seemed so right.

But I still dream of some Italian opera blasting out while driving into Italy, maybe through the Dolomites, in a Maserati 3200....

Going by this and the other thread about musically oblivious people I must be the only Coldplay fan on here!

The car -

The song - Thunder Road - http://cdn.images.pistonheads.com/aimg/3140/314061...

The drive - tearing it out of an american state of your choice with your sweetheart in the passengers seat as the sun starts to set, windows down an the engine roaring.

scratchchin

Now you've got me thinking.

The tune:

Pour Mon Ame by Donizetti

All those high C's, matched by foot-to-floor moments in this:

Along the Futa Pass.
