one-off sailing boat - where can it be put to market ?
Discussion
First : I don´t know if this is considered "advertisement", mods pm me or remove.
Short story :
At the location where I work there is a guy building his dream, a BIG sailing boat.
Bought the plans from the designer 25 years ago and started hand-laminating a ~40ft hull.
Up to 6inches thick at the bow as he planned a round-the-world trip including drift ice.
Outside and inside, all handcrafted to his very high standards.
Door frames made from ONE piece of siberian mammoth trees anyone ?
I work on this site for 15 years now and always saw him tinkering, sanding, laquering,
often had a chat with him admiring his obsession.
Now the boat is about 80% complete, the guy is mid-50s
and two days ago he lost a very short and sudden battle against cancer.
R.I.P. Hans
His girlfriend for 30 years now has an awful lot to manage but somehow the question will pop up :
where and to whom could this project be offered ?
She does not have the skills -and determination- to finish the boat/yacht/ship.
Can you give me a tip where this one-of-a kind custom can be put to market ?
Yes I know about ebay but maybe there are more specialized sites for extreme sailing enthisiasts ?

If it has been carried out to a high standard like you say then I'm sure a Brokerage house like Boatshed.com would put it up, a local Broker would come round and view its potential and take all the photos needed. Otherwise the family could list it themselves on boatsandoutboards.co.uk
It does not sound too extreme and there are plenty of people that love yacht projects (many seem to like the project more than the actual sailing!!). It would be good if they could find who the designer was and all the plans etc as that will be important and hopefully he kept a record of the ballasting details and weight as it will need to float the right way up.

Local broker would come up with a price and sell it no-doubt, most brokers post your boat on all the big online sites themselves- you don't need to do antyhing until it sells and collect the money from the broker (minus their (rarely) inconsiderably fee)
I have mine up with a broker at present but to be honest now (this time of year) and now (in this economy) is not good boat selling time, fingers crossed for next spring and a miracle comeback in the world market!
Boat sounds amazing though.

I would contact Baum & Konig in Flensburg. They are used to dealing with the one-offs and oddball sales.

Thank you for the answers (so far), will forward them to the lady in a while.
Would be heartbreaking if the boat could not be sold and rot/get crushed/skipped,
she already had a -minor- stroke a few weeks ago.
Hans will have the oceans as his final home, sea burial was arranged by him.
He was an interesting character, did CAD drawings and renderings
for all german motorhome companies including the very tricky "cut-away" pictures.
