It was more curiosity than any great expectations, but really quite horrible. Thick, sweet and sickly.

Is there anything else on the supermarket shelves to avoid?

Sanatogen?

That is drunk by old ladies that smell of Avon perfume and pissy knickers.

What the hell were you looking for? A nice shiraz? rofl

It was the sanatogen bit that made me curious. It was the 'drug of choice' hehe when you hit 40.
A standing joke in our family, and others too I'm sure is you get sanatogen pills for your fortieth birthday.

Waitrose's own brand Chianti. Tastes awful and costs around £9 a bottle. The cheapest £5 Chiantis taste better.

From Waitrose:

Shaw Smith Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc - £14.99

Mount Difficulty Otago Pinot Noir - £24.99

Both drinkable but hideously overpriced. Particularly in the case of the Pinot Noir - I could get better Burgundy for the money.

A person would have to sink a long way to enjoy this:

Yes, that looks like a bottle shaped for the connoisseur; exceptional.

Another from Waitrose. Stupidly, I though this was worth trying.

Eva's Vineyard Chenin Blanc / Pinot Grigio / Királyleányka 2010 Neszmély Region, Hungary

"This is an easy-drinking and fruity white from the Hungarian hills, named after winemaker Eva Keresztury."

Easy-drinking? Well, after you get over the first mouthful, I suppose it gets slightly easier but only by adding a large measure of crème de cassis or similar.

I wouldn't mind so much, but it's only 10%!

Don't even think about it.

Wine from a more gentile time.

Orange juice on a doyley, carvery, black forest gateaux and a bottle of Mateus.

Grandfather in a Lyle and Scott and a Cortina Ghia after a quick nine holes.

Now it's all Gallardos and Barolos and three quarter length trousers.

Drank an Australian Viognier (forget which producer) this summer that just seemed to glue itself to the roof of my mouth in a peanut butter sort of way. Very cloying. <Bleurr>

You're missing the brown paper bag it comes in. biggrin

I used to live in Devon, so we'd frequently pass the Buckie wagons on the way up the road from the monastery. You should have seen the face on my Glaswegian brother in law when he saw you could get a whole tanker of the stuff....
