Anyone been to Iceland in January?

A few friends and I intend to spend a week in Icleand from the 20th Jan 2012. The intention is to hire a 4x4 and travel around stopping whenever we come across something interesting (frequently).

Has anyone done this or similar at this time of year and can anyone suggest agood starting point (i assume the capital is the best start point)?

Most roads will be impassable, even in something like a Landcruiser at that time of the year. You'd really be better off waiting a few months.
