My dad was diagnosed with a tumour in his colon last year but thankfully all seems well after an op to remove some of his intestines. Well he's back on the ale and eating curries anyway biggrin

Now as I have had a dodgy tum for decades, I thought it best to finally go and see my doctor. It seems that it is NHS policy to only test close family who have had relatives with colon cancer when they are 10 years younger than the age that the relative was diagnosed.

This means that it will be another 12 years before I get the 'ol camera up the bumhole treatment. This seems shortsighted on the NHS' part but as my doctor sadly said, it's all down to budget.

He personally would like all patients tested at 50.

Anyhow that really is another thread. So he does what checks he can and goes through my symptoms and finally says that he thinks it's IBS. Always seems a cop out to me but if you go on-line there appears to be millions of people out there with this condition.

He suggested that I Google the FODMAP diet as it's a pretty new one devised in Australia and for a week I have tried to stick to it.

There is loads of stuff that you cannot eat as the food has a sugar in it that can't be digested by people with IBS so it ends up feeding bad bacteria in the gut causing all those nasty embarrassing problems.

So it's been a week and I have to say that I am much improved. I have basically cut out bread, milk and beer/wine and anything connected to them. A bit boring but I am allowed gin, vodka, tonic and plain crisps laugh

Guess what I feasted on last Friday night.

Not so much a problem when at home but it is difficult when you are out. Luckily I don't go out much.

So is anyone else trying this and how are you getting on?

My worry is that it is a bit extreme and that I should be tested for other intolerences like lactose, gluten etc rather than cutting the whole lot out.

I went to the food allergy aisle in the Supermarket the other day and bought some Bramley Apple pies. No gluten, no wheat, no lactose but it tasted wonderful. Should do for double the price.

Hang on! according to FODMAPs, apple is one of the fruits you can't have as it's full of fructose (One of the sugars to avoid yet you are allowed normal cane suger).

D'oh but it was delicious anyway.

Can't help with the diet but you could try cutting out different foods for a fortnight each and see if it helps.

Cheers. Think I've started already as after I posted that I nipped downstairs for a bowl of cornflakes but unthinkingly chucked milk over it instead of the soy alternative and happily munched the whole lot before I realised.

You get used to it (cutting out). If you enjoy white coffee/mocha/cappuccino, you might want to try Nescafe's all-in-one sachets as I'm lactose intolerant yet can still enjoy those (can't deal with even boiled/cooked/hot milk, sadly).
