some time ago i bought a TVR 3000M to restore iam thinking of putting a cologne 2.9engine and 5 speed gear- box into it, as i have a spare in the garage,my only concern is the engine is out of an S2 and should be fitted with air flow metres which i dont have ,but do have an ECU from an S3 which dont run AFMs but require lambder sensors.reading on the forum the AFM can be troublesom?is this going to be more hassle than its worth iam asking my self???? any tips advice appriciated.kev

You need an ECU from an S3C are you sure thats what it is - an S3 still has AFM's

Hi Chris ,yes the ECU has come out of an S3C that was scrapped last year so know the history of that part ,my current s3c has had the cats removed and is fitted with lambder sensors and no airflow meters a bit confusing i know .i believe the s2 has the airflow meters and the s3c without ???kev

The engine is the same.

You need exhaust manifolds with lamda sensors, a MAP sensor (very important), and the correct ECU (ie from a non-AFM car).

There was an S3 model and an S3C - only the latter ECU will do the job.

......In addition to TVRGit

From memory, the sensors on the S2 plenum, fuel rail and the engine wiring loom to the injectors / sensors are subtly different to the S3C. I've just finished rebuilding my S2 and installed an S3C engine from my spares car. To fit it using the s2 air flow meters and S2 ECU I swapped the plenum, fuel rail and the engine loom off the S3c engine for the S2 items and it works fine. My (possibly warped) logic says to me that it would be vice versa to make an S2 engine into and S3c..Hope this makes some sort of sense!?!

I have an S3c plenum, fuel rail and loom I'd happily swap for the S2 ones if you wanted to go down that line..

You have come up trumps as usual ,after looking through my very untidy garage ive managed to collect the following parts 1 S2 engine 1 S3C,HIGH mileage complete with engine loom, the MAP sensor to match the S3C ECU and a pair of old lambder sensors ,thanks for mentioning the difference in engine loom and fuel rail, the exhaust manifold clearance may be a problem but iam sure there must be a solution to this may be granada manifolds with the lambder boss fittings, when ive made some progress i will post some photos thanks again kev...

Having owned an Essex V6 car albeit a Sc*m*tar GTE which was sweet (sorry for swearing!) would you consider sourcing another Essex and selling your Cologne to fund its purchase? The Essex is quite tuneable and you do not have any electronic problems - because it hasn't got any - but similar torque curve to a 2.9 and still sounds fantastic. It might save some long conversations with insurers as well. Sorry to spoil the current train of thought but always worth having another view on such matters.

Cheers
Tony
