I'm due for a pay rise this week, its in my contract, however my manager is putting it off for various reasons. Saying he doesn't have time to arrange it, or it'll be a little while yet.

Can anyone advise on how to proceed? I emailed him last week, politely reminding him and asking if we could arrange a meeting for this week. Apparently we can discuss it, but we can't put it in place right now...

He did a similar thing with my colleague (a 4 months delay infact), although he got a 12% rise in the end (so significant).

Thanks guys

It's likely it'll be backdated anyway, so what's the rush?

It is? What makes you say that? I thought it would just start from the day of the rise, or at worst on next months wage.

Backdated, you loon biggrin Means it will be effective from the day you were meant to get it, even if it takes a few months to kick in. One happy March payday.

Hmm, ok. So is this sometimes standard practice with employers? Whats a reasonable time to wait?

Although it is most important to you (and that is understanable, naturally) It won't be as important for your manager, especially if they are genuinely busy. I'd say an acceptable/normal time to wait is 2 months. But with the understanding that it will be backdated. Check with your colleague to see if there pay was backdated.

Normally I wouldn't be too quick to rush, but I'm intending to be a guarantor and I need this rise to go through with it. The sooner I know the figure, the sooner I can proceed (or not).

What, exactly, does your contract say?
