2 of mine are:

1. Foam. just looks like spit on your plate
2. After watching Masterchef, that thing where they run the back of a spoon through a blob of sauce. Is it legally binding to do it now?

The obsession with removing salt, fat and calories from prepackaged food.

Look, a diet of gristle and bones pies and pasties is going to kill you sooner or later whether they're 700 calories apiece or 450 calories apiece with the taste of cardboard. But as a reasonably healthy bloke with heart, blood sugar and blood pressure all fine, I'm a bit miffed that I can no longer buy an "all day breakfast sandwich" and have it be a gustatory explosion of everything that is wrong and bad but oh so incredibly satisfying once in a while - at least, without having to search far and wide for a trailer-based greasy spoon in a layby where dietary health concerns will forever be stuck in 1976.

I never see the point in that - surely its just a stone-cold smear by the time it actually reches the table.

No problems with a smear of a sauce or a purée on a warmed plate if it adds to the overall flavour combination that the chef was trying to achieve.

Things I hate about modern food, unless you go to a good quality restaurant you'll pay through the nose for mediocre crap served by uninterested people who feel that they are above the concept of providing good service.

It's a sad indictment that "I can cook better at home", has become a watchword in our house.

The concept that thimble-sized portions of taramosalata, hummous and tsatziki with one pitta bread sliced jenga style on a wooden board is worth £9.

I think modern food is pretty good these days. We have so much variety and choice. Often if there's something you don't like you just have to go down the road to the next shop and you can get what you want.

If anything the thing I hate about modern food is that people still exist that are lazy and ignorant of all of the good food around them!

Oh do come on... wink

Your grub is vastly superior to 99% of restaurants except the Michelin-starred (which I've not been to).

I hate the salt police cop

Also, people who have no understanding or appreciation of well sourced, prepared and cooked food, even if it slapped them around the face.

Food marketing in the UK underpins our ingrained lack of understanding too. Take the Philadelphia adverts for Christ's sake!

Good food is within reach of all of us yet so many either accept, or are unconsciously consuming, utter crap.

Don't get me wrong, I eat crap but I'm fully aware of what it is and why I enjoy it. I also cook from fresh 5 times a week and eat a balanced diet as does my wife.

Oh, I almost forgot. Pre-packed sandwiches with blander than bland fillings.

- things, like tiny rabbit sized portions of food costing way too much (the kind found on masterchef).
- the way readymeals, sauces etc... are tarnished with an 'english' brush. in that the flavours are made bland, the chilli/heat is removed (yet still marketed as 'hot').
- when you each order seperate starters, but its such a large portion, you could have just shared 1

Garlic. vomit

The smelly disgusting ste in just about everything these days, even sneaked in to old favourites with no mention, except the small print - it'll be in the desserts next - cheap way of masking cheap ingredients in products.

Makes the mouth taste crap the next day and 99% of the population now seem to walk around smelling like a frenchman (to quote Lord Blackadder). Meetings in hot, airless rooms are now a trial!

hehe

tbh, the garlic you buy these days is pretty ste so it doesn't taste of anything unless you use four or five cloves

we've grown our own for the last few years - slicing just one clove makes my eyes water as it's so strong lick

Pre-packaged food, so I avoid it 99 times out of a 100. Water and additive in meat, cooked and raw. Additives, most of them. Heston.

fking un-dressed rocket salad.

Rocket is bitter and needs to be properly dressed so that the flavours balance.

But nooooo, here's a pile of artistic rocket leaves.

Enjoy.

Also, while I'm at it. This trend of waiter/esses letting you tuck into your meal, then waiting until you've got a gobful and then sidling up to the table to ask, "And how is everything for yourself?"
