What size garage ?
Discussion
Search function doesn't seem to be working at the mo, so apologies if this info is already here somewhere... I may be moving in the near future and if so I'm going to have to build a garage (nice rundown gaff with plenty of room around it but no garage). Will be looking at a double so enough space for two cars but also room for work benches and storage etc, will probably go for a lift as well. Any advice on best size or do's and dont's ? Best material for construction ? Cheers, Chilli...
I am just in the process of buying a place without garage as well
My existing garage is 6m x6m. It was OK if arranged properly, but with the TVR, Trike, Motorcycle, Ride on Mower, Lathe, Compressor, drill press, 8x3 workbench, shelving and freezer in there it could get cramped.
If I get my way at the new place I have already done a layout for an 18m x 9m garage/workshop with potential of having a three quarter height second floor. Just have to convince SWMBO.

Maybe just build it as big as you can and consider future conversion to an extension or a granny annex?
Ideally I guess the minimum would be the width of one car, plus the space to lie underneath either sill with you legs sticking out (if you're doing work) and not touch the garage wall - so maybe 18ft?
Sorry, that's the closest I can offer to a useful observation. On a less constructive note - very jealous of anyone with a proper double garage.

6mx6m here, i built it and i did the labouring myself, and paid a couple of brickies a daily rate, did it out of concrete block with a pitched and tiled roof. Then rendered.
Steel doors for security and sunk some ground anchors in for the bikes while at it.
Cost me around £5k all in.
That sounds like a bargain - pics please?Steel doors for security and sunk some ground anchors in for the bikes while at it.

My garage is 18ft x 17ft.
Enough room for the TVR & an Estate, though wouldn't have said there was enough room to do all the prep work to build a car with the TVR in the garage.
So would be suggesting something a little longer and wider than that.
And don't forget a door out the back...!
