Running an Engine in
Discussion
Im currently re-assembling my triumph 1500 engine (yes i know most people hate it!) anyway, its been totally overhauled with a rebore, reground crank etc, what i'd like to know is what is the best way of running it in? What i've been told so far is to use a 30 weight oil designed specifically for running in for ~200miles keeping the revs well down, then change it for whatever oil im going to use.
This all sounds resonable, but what to do after ive taken out the 30w oil? surely it wouldn't be too sensible to start reving it within a tappets clearance of its life after 200 miles! Does 6-700 miles gradually building up the max revs as i go sound resonable?
Say limited to 3k then 3.5k and so on? The rev limit of the engine (in the form its been rebuilt) will realistically be 6k.
Thanks.....

Use cheap oil at the reccommended grade (which is probably 15W-50) Duckams Q? don't use thin stuff as you may knacer the bearing shells.
Use about 1/2 revs max half load for the first 100 miles or so then start using 2/3rds revs and load for the next couple of hundred then occassionally using full load and full throttle at brief periods up to 500 miles.
Change the oil for something decent and a fit a new oil filter. still treat with some consideration but use normally for another 500 then ok the thrash it.
If you don't give a new engine any load reasonably early on you'll never bed the rings in.
