Can anyone recommend some eating places in York? Also decent pubs? Will be visiting for a week soon. Thanks.

Cafe No 8 on Gillygate is good for sit down food.

Tarts & Titbits on Gillygate is good for lunch on the move/hoof.

Are you fking kidding?

Try The Blue Bicycle or The Biltmore.

If you go to Zizzi you could be anywhere.

As mentioned in the "quirky" thread, The House of the Trembling Madness is absolutely unique to go for a pint.

My son reckons the student union does a decent burger and a pint.

The Maltings next to Lendal bridge is well worth a look, it always has some nice beers on.

Yes, try Bari on the Shambles rd. Nice little Italian.

I can personally vouch for Mason's for pub/bistro type food, and Khao San Road for Thai. Both excellent.

Meltons for fine dining (was there on Monday)
Meltons Too for pub/bistro
Cafe No 8 is excellent
The Go Down has very good food and is great value
El Paradiso Del Cibo for Italian (will have to book ahead at weekends)

Good pubs include Brigantes, Blue Bell, Lamb & Lion, The Swan, Yorkshire Terrier, Pivo.
The Masons Arms does good pub grub. The rabbit pie is my favourite. Huge portions!

Pivo is now called Pivni and does quality beer from around the world, the sort of place you pick your beer from a menu smile House of Trembling Madness is good for a drink as mentioned! Guy Fawkes Inn does cask ales and good pub grub and has tons of old school character.

Not been for some years, but on our last visit the only place we could find of note was Betty's Tea Rooms. They serve basic, but well prepared evening meals.

Apologies to Yorkshire folk if I am out of date.

Mrs tr7ster & I had a fantastic meal at the Churchill Hotel on Bootham when we were in York back in July. Top notch, and discounted too if you have (or can borrow...) a Gourmet Society card.

Had on decent enough Steak in The Biltmore, but nothing earth shattering.

Really like the Trembling Madness/Delerium Tremens.
