Audio Interface for iMac needed.

I have a Focusrite Saffire interface to connect my midi keyboard and analog stuff (guitar and microphone) to my, now dead, old iMac. It uses Firewire 400.

My new iMac only has Firewire 800 and, from the Focusrite and apple forums, it would appear even with conversion cables or plugs there are issues with this old unit and new iMacs.

So... I need to purchase a new interface. So can anyone recommend a good but low cost interface i should use. I can do with as little as one MIDI connection and 2 line ins so not looking for anything expensive or powerful.

Well, fwiw, I would take the Firewire 400/800 conversion issue with a pinch of salt.

You don't say which Focusrite saffire you've got, but (a) for the price of a cable (or a conversion plug) it's gotta be worth at least trying.
Firewire conversion is purely a speed issue.

Try it first - you could save some money!

IF not, if you like the Focusrite, I'd stick with em.

I think they're great and have a lovely sound. But the Saffires all sound the same - they just have differing amounts of I/O.

What can be done is:

Saffire to ext drive with FW400 & 800 ports: Ext drive to iMac.

I have to do this with my digi 002R and my MacBook Pro.
