XBox 360 - what to buy?

We've decided to buy K Junior (and me) an Xbox for Christmas.

Not really up on the specs, etc on the xbox - but bottom line, what are the 'must haves' in terms of hardware, accessories and games.

On the games front, bear in mind he's only 10, so all those Doom'esque games are not really on. But he loves his footy and driving games on the Wii (Fifa11, Forumla 1 , Mario Kart, etc)

Any help gratefully received.

Also, any tips on best places to buy from - online or in-store.

There are two choices - a 4GB console, and a 250GB one. You need the 250GB one if you want to play anything as lots of games have hefty Downloadable Content and sometimes want to install one of the DVDs (Forza does)

Talking of which, you'll want Forza 4, it's awesome.

Another vote for Forza 4.

You'll be spending weeks tweaking the suspension set up to get your 355 round turn 17 at Sebring that little bit quicker and he'll be battering down Fujimi Kaido in a grid filled with Hummers (or maybe the other way round )

So what I seem to be down to is a 250gig machine, with Forza 4, FIFA12 and Kinect.

As an overall package, the cheapest I can find is Game at £325. Next up is Amazon at £343, followed closely by Tescos at £357 and Sainsburys at £358!

Individually, the best package still comes from game. This is based on the FIFA12 gamepack @ £190, the Kinect @ £100 and Forza 4 @ £35!

Looks like Game it is. Although I've not looked at QuidCo or MVC yet.

So over and above the base setup above - is there anything else for consideration?

Yup, I'd seen the £155 offer, but not the £250 one - which is the cheapest

You can set up parental controls if you want more adult games for yourself, something to remember.

I know this might sound like a daft question; but having had a Wii for years, I'm used to the wireless controllers.

It looks like the Xbox controllers are wired; but you can get wireless ones.

I'd have thought that wireless would be the norm these days. Is that not the case? I'm googling, but not finding the right answer

And you can set up how long they play for which you may find handy

Edit: you should get one wireless controller with the console and extras are around £25-£35.

Fifa 12/PES 12 (whichever you prefer, PES for me)

Rock Band/Guitar Hero (brilliant for family/friends stuff)
Grand Theft Auto (for you)
Kinect stuff (for your lad)


There are a few voucher deals going on at the minute with the big releases - most are covered on hotukdeals.com and quidco.com - could save yourself £20/30 easily using them. No catches, use them all the time. Hope that helps

Wireless controllers are the norm - you can buy a charge kit which usually results in you playing with a cable as you have forgotten to charge the thing.

In terms of accessories, you'll want a mount for the top of the TV really, mine was about £5.

Extra black wireless.controllers are £25+ and the only other things you'll want are an HDMI cable and a 12 month subscription to Xbox live so you can play online!

I think others have covered it as far as games and wireless controllers go.

one further thing to add though:
If you have a wii you will love Xbox Kinect)...it makes the wii feel very primitive.

Depending on how good your wifi coverage it, you could consider some powerline adaptors.

With a decent network connection, you can also use the xbox as a media extender to play movies, music and pictures from shared folders in either a PC or a NAS.
