Bloody SVA!!!

Please, please, what is your sidelight and where is your sidelight? It has to be a separate sidelight unit but I asked about using a side repeater and the SVA man didn't know! No use to me drilling a hole in a Z06 to have it fail!

From memory (I don't see the front of the car when driving, so...)

For US cars, originally you have yellow running lights on the outside and yellow indicators on the inside. Mine now has an indicator where the outside running light was, then the old inside indicator is split in the middle with a white side-light on the outside and an indicator on the inside... I think that's right... if it's critical I can check!

I understand that the Euro-C5 has a separate sidelight tucked into the inner vents, totally independent of the lens unit. The Z06 stops you doing this by having the mesh vent and I doubt that the SVA would permit a light behind it.

The side orange part doesn't satisfy the angle of visibility test for indicators which must be visible from 45 degrees inboard.

This just leaves the main white compartment which has to be used for the indicator.

You could be onto something here. If I cut a slot across the base of the indicator and insert a shaped piece of aluminium, I can create a separate compartment for the sidelight.

If you have a photo or can check, I'd be very grateful. Wish I'd farmed this bit out now.

Sidelight (first position when you turn the end of your indicator arm). On mine we added a seperate white sidelight bulb in the plastic housing where the indicator / Day light running (DLR) lamps are fitted. I disconnected the DLRs as orange lights are not allowed in the UK.

The new sidelights are fitted to mine by drilling a hole into the plastic back piece of each side light unit and then inserting a twist fit light holder and bulb. We also put an aluminium seperator into the plastic housing to make the light "seperate" from what already exists in this plastic housing.

If you are at the Nats at the weekend I will show you!

I won't be anywhere on the weekend except fabricating a new light unit as I have to get it done or I'll explode into a million pieces. If you happen to have a digita photo, you can e-mail it to me at wayne.croot@tiscali co.uk.

How did you get the aluminium separator into the unit or did you cut a slot and slide it in.

Well the SVA book makes no sense on that point. It basically says that if the area around lamp A and the area around lamp B in a split compartment is more than 60% of the total area, it's treated as one lamp. I don't understand it at all to be honest.

Anyway, I've decided to order the ordinary UK C5 sidelights and take the mesh grille out for the SVA. I'll replace the grilles afterwards as the mesh is quite transparent.

Next question:

Where is your rear fog lamp? I mounted mine on the rear chassis rail but this puts it about 6 inches under the bumper and this fails the angle of visibility test which has a remarkably shallow 25 degrees either side and an even shallower 5 degree angle up and down.

Mines tucked up right inbetween the mufflers. Passed SVA just fine :-)

Snap!

Sorry Wayne, but the car is up at Geoff's until Friday so won't be able to send a close up picture. Try calling Paul Strudwick at Teslayn Engineering (Bicester) and ask him how he did it.

It's OK. I'm getting there slowly. Tucked between the exhausts certainly fails the SVA requirement and that's where I've mounted mine but the SVA man said he'd "have a look at it". Hmm. Really, it needs to come out on a bracket flush with the rear bumper edge. That's why Euro-Vettes have them on the back bumper - to satisfy the angles of visibility test.

I've given up on the sidelight ingenuity and have ordered the UK C5 sidelights that go in the centre vents. If GM couldn't do it, I'm happy to agree with them. They were £30 each plus VAT from Bauer Millett but to hell with it. I'll take the mesh grilles out for the SVA test and put them back later as the light easily shines through.

I've also been told that the limo tints have to be removed from the side windows - the manual says 70% light must pass through. Removal doesn't look too difficult.

I note an ad on Auto Trader for a yellow 2002 Z06 with 10k on the clock selling for just shy of £40k. Quite a svaing (sorry..saving) for me importing then!
