Where can I get a new wiring loom?

By the way, I've started on the re-restoration of my mini estate (3rd time and this time it's going to be done properly!), so if anyone is interested I'll post up some pics of the bodywork before it goes and after it's been to Chris S and as I make progress.

Roll cage is staying in, 8 port engine is going back in, and I'm really looking forward to it being back on the road in the spring

Hi Neil,

Off the shelf at Mini Spares, I think.
The estate should be great when it's done. Chris Spennewyn has a 1965 'Woody' Traveller. I guess you may have seen it. He's going to turn it into a 1275 'S' Traveller, but keep it looking absolutely standard except for the exhaust. I'm going to build him a completely standard Cooper 'S' engine. It will be great and with his bodywork skills it should look superb.

Hi Neil,

Mini Spares have looms on the shelf I think.
Your Estate should be great when it's complete.

Theres a company that advertises in the Mini magazines that do looms to order.

So if you say wanted one for an internal fuse box they can supply that off the shelf.

Maybe worth considering...

I thought about an internal fuse box. Better for keeping things clean and tidy, but I thought it would be harder to get to if a fuse blows.

The dash/instruments are the hardest bit for me to decide on.

I want to keep everything in the centre, and I've got some really nice gauges, but the oil and water gauges are electric so I'd prefer not to use them.

I can't get capillary guages to match and the the speedo has no provision for warning lights, but so far I haven't found any warning lights I like, plus I don't want to hack a new wiring loom about too much.

Tried all sorts of idea's and the loom is a nightmare now as it has an alarm and immobiliser in it as well, so I want to start again.

Don't know what to do yet

I know what you mean, Neil. I'm about to start the extra wiring on my black Enduro Rally Car. I have drawn up the additional circuit diagrams, but putting that into reality is a different matter. I want to convert from a 9V to a 12V coil to improve reliability as I've had the 'pink' resistor wire burn out in the past and destroy the front loom. I'm also going to change from a pre-engaged starter to an inertia one with a separate solenoid as that's more reliable and it gives more space for the oil cooler. This means an early-type starter ring on the flywheel as well.
It's all work.

Hi Peter

At least there is method in your madness!

I'm creating all this work for myself because I want to keep some "nice" gauges

The pics show it's a bit of a rats nest

(they're about 360k each and not compressed so dialup people beware!)

I've got a 120mph speedo I could put in along with a lucas dual oil pressure/water temp gauge and a lucas volt meter, but then I'm not sure where to put the tacho

Peter, my 91 cooper carb is 12v, after doing a lot of research into whether i had a ballasted system. The standard coil is specific to the electronic ignition. The feed to the coil on mine is a white wire.

Tim, I'll have a look at mine this evening. I think the white cable carries the ignition to the coil from the end of the 'resistor wire'. The resistor wire runs inside the loom and it's this I have had problems with. My sister-in-law had a Mini 30 and she had the resistor wire burn out. It had the effect of melting the insulation in several other cables in the loom, including indicators, headlights and sidelights. i had to strip it all out, separate the wires which were all gooey and re-run three of them. The others i managed to repair with insulaton tape. then I loomed them all up again. However, I did run a nwe white cable directly from the ignition switch to a nwe 12v coil and all was well.
Chris S. had the same problem with a 1990 car, and I went and fixed this in the same way.
Off home now to work some more on my Enduro car.

Neil,

I've got a catalogue from they guys who were at stoneleigh if you want it, their looms were very good, and cheaper than mini spares IIRC.

Give me a shout if you want it,

Ian
