Tamron 18-270 - any thoughts ?

As above really - it actually reviews quite well and the range is massive!

I have a 70-300 that I don't use very often so the plan would be to chop it in against this - I guess it wouldn't be as good at the long end but massively more versatile and I do need a 'walkabout' as all I have at the moment is a 10-22, a 50, a 100 and the 70-300

Any thoughts/advice appreciated - anybody got one ?

A chap i work with has one that he bought as a do-it-all lens.

I havent actually seen any pictures he's taken with it but he seems to be really happy with it, and he owns/has owned some really top glass (400mm L 2.8, 400mm f/4 DO, 100-400L, 70-300L, 100L macro to name a few!)

He recently took the tam 18-270 and canon 70-300L with his 7D to Goodwood revival and he said, and i quote "I can't tell the difference." Now obvioulsly it's slower, and AF will be slower, but either the IQ is pretty darn good, or his eyes knackered. (to be honest it could be either, or a bit of both )

If I'm doing any 'proper' togging it tends to be macro (100 prime) or landscapes (10-22) so to be honest it wouldn't have to be absolutely top notch glass for my purposes - ie general walkabout snapping

I have a 18 - 270 on my D7000
its a great lens .... the range is excellent but sometimes its a bit slow
but the image stabilisation claws back a couple of stops or so
It allows handheld shots down to around 15th sec at wider views.

I would undoubtedly reccommend it as a great all rounder
the zoom can move / drift when pointing the camera downwards and it only locks in the wide setting.

There are limitations but once you know them, its an easy 9 out of 10

my advice is take your camera body to a tamron dealer and have a play
you wont be dissappointed.

I found warehouse express very helpful both over the phone and in store

I have one on a 60D, love it, just use it as an all round lens, great when walking round a show or something.

good (light, important for DD ) do it all lens, nowhere near the quality of my Canon 100-400 though.

Just need to dispose of my 70-300 now - Mifsuds offered me £180 but they seem to be going on eBay for round about £250 - £300... now I wonder what I could do ...

I have one on my Canon.
As an 'everyday' lens for my 365 project it's useful. The images are not as good as Canon 70/300, but the compact size makes for convenience when the best quality isn't necessary. It can be slow to focus and the lens can creep, but overall I'm happy with it but wouldn't use it when I'm seeking higher picture quality.

Thanks - I have made up my mind I am going for it, so my 70-300 is up on eBay and I have asked Santa for the 18-270

(PS - anybody after a 70-300 give me a shout )
