Impreza WRX STI V-Limited
Discussion
Hi all, I've been looking at getting a winter car that will cope with nasty roads and a work colleague is selling his scooby. It's a 96 V-Limited with around 95K on the clock, at a very reasonable price. Oh, it's apparently an import, and has a bigger turbo than the equivalent UK spec car. Any views on this car most welcome as I know absolutely bugger all about scoobies. It seems there might not be many of these about, but again, the scooby world is all new to me...
Many thanks in advance, chilli.

I know there good in the wet etc. but if you just want a winter car then I would not get a scooby. If you want a fast fun car, well then that's different...
What I should have said was I'm looking to buy an everyday practical car that will be good in all weather, useable through the winter, and will also be fun. I already have a fast fun car and although I don't mind it getting wet it wouldn't be first choice if I was driving some distance and the outlook was rain/snow/ice
Oh, and its also only got two seats
The only thing that works against them for snow use is the ground clearance in comparison to a proper 4wd, and the fact that most people run performance-oriented summer tyres on them.
If its a Type-RA V-ltd then it will have DCCD which is even better as you can lock the centre diff completely.

I think I have found the one you are talking about. It is an WRX STi 555 V ltd (version 2). As it is going to be an everyday car it is probably a good thing it isn't an RA as they have close ratio gearbox which means 75mph is at 4,000 rpm (or there abouts).
As with all cars have a good look at the history, oil changes cambelts etc. Are there any modification? It will need to be run on Super Unleaded unless it has been mapped for 95ron. The dealer will probably tell you it doesn't, but it does.
Check it has been undersealed as they don't come from the factory with much/any. Check for rust around the rear aches
If you want somebody to come with you pop a post on http://scoobycity.co.uk/ (Norfolk based owners club) and I'm sure one of them might come along.
Good luck

[edit] Just seen you have already found Scoobycity and it isn't the car I was thinking off. [/edit]

Longer 5th gear was an option on the V-Ltd, so it may be the case that 1-4 are short, and 5 is the same ratio as the vanilla WRX/STi.The thing about Impreza's is that even if they arent the best handling cars, they have fairly consistent forward grip most of the time.
[I had a Version4 TypeR with the V Limited 5th gear (Basicaly a Euro/uk 0.738 5th gear) fitted to the standard R/RA box. This increased the top end from 19mph/1000rpm to 22mph/1000rpm and was the only thing the V Limited had that I wanted.]
As stated by one poster already the DCCD boxes can be locked 50:50 like a landrover so that you get great traction up hills and across ice, and they also have no ABS because of this, so it wont mess up your braking efforts.
But, in the snow you will still have the same ground clearance and braking distance problems of every other saloon car. Anything low to the ground will get ice blasted and although you can go up the hills others cant, you will still have traction problems in stopping you from going down the other side too fast.
A landrover it aint!!

I ran my sti v2 for 8 years in all weather. I found it to be great in the snow, it's not a jeep but compared to 2 wheel drive it is better (good for drifting too).
The sti v limited is an import and comes with no abs (which i personally prefer) so remeber that when braking in the snow..lol. I used to run 16" wheels in the winter which seem to help.
These cars are getting rarer now and are becoming fairly sought after if in good condition. As for the turbo it is bigger than the uk equivalent (tdo5 to be precise). It left the factory with 276bhp compared to 260 from the import wrx and 208 from the uk car.
