Weeride Child Seats

Anyone use a Weeride child seat on their bike? Are they any good? They appeal to me far more than the other options - I particularly hate seeing kids on a seat behind the parent with a rucksack in their face and unable to see anything.

I use a trailer for my daughter BUT I ride with people who use rear-seats and I've often thought what a shame it is for the child who can't see anything. One of the rear-seats is particularly bad for supporting the child when he falls asleep, and his head lols around like in the video. The other seat is much better though, and has side "wings" to contain the boy if he does fall asleep. That one also has a cushoined bad in front of the child so he can put his hands on there which seems to have the effect that he lies backwards when he sleeps, instead of loling around. Also, the bar acts as a secondary safety device.

So I like the idea of the front mounted seats however they look harder-work for the parent. You have to splay your legs out but all the other benefits explained in that video appear well founded.

All of which is why I prefer trailers. The number of people who take a look at my daughter in her little sleeping bag inside the trailer and say "ahh..!!" indicates how much joy I appear to be bringing to the world.

Have a look at the OkBaby Orion too. I have been very pleased with it - less clunky than the WeeRide I think BUT you will need to be sure it will mount on your bike (it can mount on either the steerer tube or down tube). It mounts fine on the steerer of my old MTB but would struggle to mount either way on a lot of modern MTB frame designs I think.

If you can make it fit then they are brilliant - I have done some quite long on and off road rides with my daughter in safety using it and she has loved every minute. You can actually ride very comfortably once it is set up.

Having said that i'm sure the WeeRide will be great too - I'm definitely a believer front mounted is the way to go.

We have one for our three year old and it has been great. On the plus side you can have a good chat when riding along. The centre of gravity is largely unchanged. It feels very safe. Our boy can safely fall asleep if he wants to. They hold there value you very well should decide to sell it later.

The downsides are you do need to ride a bit splay legged but that is only a minor issue. Some really oversized frames are a problem. Fits fine on my 5 year old Gary fisher.

Have tried a trailer and Didn't like it. Very hard work to pedal and can't chat to little man. Rear mounted seats don't appeal and have seen one bike flip up and fall over with toddler in the seat when being walked as all the weight was so far over back wheel.
