Myself and a few colleagues will be working in Derby for a few months starting December. I'd like something a little more homely than the Jurys Inn we have been staying at for the odd day up there recently.

Looking for a village location, with a decent pub showing the midweek footy, something homely preferably (roaring fire, pool tables etc) with a varied enough menu, and an easy commute into a place they make jet engines.

Any ideas please?

What about here..? http://www.risleyguesthouse.co.uk/ - its next to the risley park pub which does san miguel on draft, does good food and has real fires.

its about 2 mins from j25 m1 / a52 junction so about 15 mins to RR

Cheers

Depends how close you want to be - Matlock (near where I live) is a pleasant Market town with enough going on but is 40mins by car or 30 mins by train. Closer would be Ashbourne or belper (all accessible to the peak). There are some nice serviced apartments on the a6 / a38 junction which is much nicer than a hotel and well positioned to get out of the city - birchover apartments from memory. Dovedale is nice and well out of the way - how rural do you want to go?

Sorry can't help with Derby

However I was in a similar situation a few years ago. Year long contract in Grimsby Had already done a few weeks of sh*tty hotels

Four of us took th ti and effort to suss out a of the nicer guest houses in cleethorpes. Found one that was great Nearly as nice as being at home

They do exist. Just needs a bit of time and effort

(Very) Reasonable commute distance, so 20 mins max would be ideal. Just looked at Dovedale, not that rural! It will be winter when we are there smile I think for work the SW side is best??

This is recommended:

12 miles from Derby, but good food, and good beer.

Can't comment on the rooms, though.

The great thing about getting a "base" is that after a few days it actually feels like going home in the evening. We also managed to find out what places did what meal deals on what nights So developed a kinda routine

Monday. Curry Buffett
Tuesday. Italian 2 for a tenner
Wednesday. Carvery deal at local pub or Grimsby fc midweek game with fish and chips onnthe hoof
Thursday. Pizza deal
Friday. Drive home

Cooked breakfast everyday. Ahhh happy days

You need to post on the midlands forum, lots from Derby, and people from RR.

There are a few of us on here that help folks fly... wink Which bit will you be working in?

A couple of suggestions:

A very nice pub:

This is a nice place, food is good, haven't used the hotel bit though

I will ask around at work and see if I can get more info for you.

Matlock is nice but the A6 traffic can be bad. If working A50/A38 end then Sudbury would be good for you.

Must say you won't be missing much staying out of the city centre.

Looked out the serviced apartments that I mentioned in one of the other posts - used them a couple of times and they were great:

http://www.birchover.com/

Nicer than a hotel, still in Derby but with easy escape routes to good roads, epic scenery and roaring log fires.
