Driving from Cannes to Maratea, Southern Italy
Discussion
I'm just after some suggestions as far as route and stratagy is concerned for the above trip.
Its looking to be a approx 700 mile trip which I'm expecting it to be a 14/15 hour drive over 2 days.
Were would be the best place to over night location wise?
I'm travelling on this part of my route mid week during mid August.
We have a week with family in Maratea to recover from the journey so not to concerned about sightseeing.
thanks

I'd suggest somewhere around Siena/Arezzo - Sorry, I don't have any actual suggestions!
I've holidayed in Maratea - very quiet and relaxed for Italy. Mind the clifftop road from the South (which is the suggested route in from the motoryway) - the Italians overtake on crazy turns!

Italy's best kept accommodation secrets are these places, www.agriturismo.it
Until you've eaten at an agritursmo farm restaurant you won't know how good food can taste

Yep Arezzo looks to be pretty much bang on for middle of the journey.
I will start searching for accomodation - not many budget hotel chains in Italy though!
I really struggled to find anything in that area last year. Might be easier to stop somewhere in Tuscany? Means a slightly shorter first day but only by an hour or two. I will start searching for accomodation - not many budget hotel chains in Italy though!
Yes the Arezzo Area does look to be halfway. Whilst Arezzo in in South East of Tuscany you would prob find somewhere in the North of Umbria (around lake Trasimeno) which is not too far of a distance south of Arezzo.
Have you looked at any Relais? I have a friend in Cortona (30 min drive south of Arezzo) which has a lovely Relais. It is called Le Corte Dei Papi.

Looking for 100-150 per night maybe.
Cortona is indeed an amazing place to stay. Villa Marsili is great value for what they offer. Dardano's restaurant on via Dardano is a fabulous place to eat...all home cooked and very inexpensive. Last time I was there in the Tuscan, I had an email from a PHer living there who spotted the car...cool stuff indeed. :-)
