Which actually means 'I am a donut' biggrin

Anyway, I digress, whilst I live in Germany I don't actually know much about Berlin and am taking my daaahlink wife there for her 40th birthday this weekend along with our two daughters.

To those of you that have been there before, what are the 'must do's' please?

All I've done so far is booked some open top bus thing biggrin

Apparently there is an old gate there which most people think is worth a visit, although I believe they have taken the fence down.

a) you've been watching too much Eddie Izzard

b) It doesn't mean that at all, it means 'I am a Berliner'

a) I don't watch Eddie Izzard and hence have no idea what you are on about

b) I've only lived here for 14 years and speak fluent German, so what would I know?

Oh and c) I don't do pissing contests and was only after some helpful info. But thanks for your opinion anyway, I shall file it.

That's a good plan.

Nearby Potsdam worth a visit, Sanssouci palace.

Not a pissing contest at all - just stating that you are wrong!

Eddie goes on about this in one of his shows (Dressed to Kill?) but it is rubbish.

"Linguist Jürgen Eichhoff laid decades of misinformation to rest with a concise grammatical analysis of Kennedy's statement in the academic journal Monatshefte in 1993. "'Ich bin ein Berliner' is not only correct," Eichhoff wrote, "but the one and only correct way of expressing in German what the President intended to say."

An actual Berliner would say, in proper German, "Ich bin Berliner." But that wouldn't have been the correct phrase for Kennedy to use. The indefinite article "ein" is required, Eichhoff explains, to express a metaphorical identification between subject and predicate. Otherwise, the speaker could be taken to say he is literally a citizen of Berlin."

So maybe you're not as fluent as you thought you were biggrin

So, would it be fair to say that, if taken literally

"Ich bin Berliner" means "I am a citizen of Berlin"

and

"Ich bin ein Berliner" means "I am a Doughnut"

Put the popcorn away, phumy, I can't be arsed. <-----Martin, you can try and Babelfish that, but it won't help you much. Oh and whilst you're at it, why not try to dig up some other fascinating 'facts' on the internet to make yourself look even more clever? It's awfully impressive biggrin

What, like a metaphorical identification between a US president and a doughnut?

Well there's a daddy bird and a lady bee (not to be confused with a ladybird - given the thread running in the lounge on bestiality)....

Or failing that, what about die Soße Tuerme biggrin

We went there earlier this year, fascinating place - but we couldn't get into the Bundestag which looked v interesting, as you have to pre-register: https://visite.bundestag.de/BAPWeb/pages/createBoo...

I'm keeping out of the doughnut issue but there have been some previous threads on Berlin that threw up some good suggestions. Have at look at

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... - pointers?

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... Talk to me!

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... to drink in Berlin?

I think Berlin is a great city, really interesting place.

Funny you should mention that, I'll never forget being sprayed with Ketchup when I was in Hamburg and I tried to recreate Mr Kennedy's speech biggrin

Thanks for the tip, Andy thumbup

Adenauer - Where do you live in Germany?

I'm marrying a Ger'wo'man next year and likely to be moving close to Stuttgart.

Went to Berlin a few years ago for a weekend with wifey. Very nice indeed. Not too sure what sort of things you like but there is a quite interesting (if a little small) museum about the wall. Also went on a river tour which took a couple of hours and was quite a nice way of seeing the sites. You should probably take a look at the tower as well.
