Been looking at Mondain watches (Swiss Railway models) on and off for a while, never taking the plunge having not seen one in real life, anyway, been working in London this week and on the train on Monday and Tuesday I saw two different guys wearing one, both white dial big date.

Had a chat with one guy about his, said it was pretty reliable etc. the big date model looked really big due to the lack of bezel etc, are they really 38mm?

Any more thoughst on them? Quite fancy the automatic model, but do you think it's worth two to three times the price of a quartz?

Lastly, best place to buy, personal experiences etc?

Cheers

The auto is nice, with the glass back too. I have one as my daily.

But it keeps lousy time, it loses 2 or 3 minutes a day, I have to wind it forward each morning to the time on breakfast telly.

Doesn't the automatic use an ETA movement? Sounds like there's a problem with your watch if it's losing that many minutes a day. The only watch I have that does that is a £10 Chinese automatic.

Oh, £300-400 for a brand new watch with a basic ETA movement is about right.

Possibly.

It's always been a poor time keeper, and it has stopped from time to time. It's well out of warranty now though, I've had it for several years.

But autos are generally poor timekeepers though, so I put it down to that. I've known premium stuff just as poor.

Wow! That's pretty bad for the premium stuff! To me, a budget auto should be +/-30s or less. A quality watch +/-20s or less. Then you have COSC spec. In any case, perhaps have a word with Ryte Time or RTL Watches. I think both are able to regulate watches.

Bought one for my girlfriend last Christmas. John Lewis at West Quay have an excellent selection. Lovely clean looking watches, she loves it!

The watch that is...

Oh, you might want to consider the Smiths Big Date PRS-27 (quartz only, sadly).

http://www.timefactors.com/smiths.htm

I prefer the design (yes, yes, it's a copy of the Mondaine) because (1) the hands match the batons better, (2) full lume dial and (3) it says "Great Britain" in tiny writing rather than "Swiss Made".

I have a quartz Mondaine. Hate the way the date goes to 39 (yes, really), and it's the only watch I have ever returned as a failure. But it's a nice slim easy to read watch under the suit cuffs. 7.5/10

Um. Did you return it as broken because it goes to 39? That's like returning a non-perpetual quartz that goes to 31st on 1st October.

I did, for the second time, for the head Mondaine guy in the UK to tell me "It's a feature".

The question is, what do they know that we don't?

hehe

I wouldn't say it's a feature. It's just the way they are. I quite like the way mine does that, too.

Sorry to drag this up. I quite fancy a Mondaine watch.
But why on earth would the date go to 39 ?

Two date wheels: https://www.jurawatches.co.uk/products/mondaine-wa...

One goes from 0 to 3, the other from 0 to 9. If let to run, unlike a normal watch with a date that would go to 31 if not reset after a 30-day month, it would go 31, 32, 33, 34 etc. because it doesn't know what the date actually is from month to month.

I just remembered I have one of these sitting about somewhere. One of the smaller non date quartz ones. Liked the design and liked how small it was. If I remember correctly though I stopped wearing it as I was struggling to ignore the "tick". IIRC it was quite a loud tick.

Haha very good.

I did like how the watch, looked, sat and wore though. Unfortunately once I start hearing it I couldn't unhear it and it spent a lot of time in my desk drawer... Where I still heard it... weeping

Embrace the Mondaine tick! That's part of the design, surely. The bold design goes with the tick. smile

Ahh thanks for that, makes perfect sense!
