There seem to be more and more people on my commute wearing helmets that look like this...
Why are they wearing them? They don't look as though they'd provide much more protection than a normal helmet, and on the downside they look like they'd boil your head on all but the coldest days. Am I missing something?

Maybe they deliberately want to distance themselves from the lycra "race me!" set? That type of helmet has been used by BMX, skate and skiing types for years. I see no reason why they wouldn't make good commuting helmets apart from the fact they will be fractionally heavier. The lack of vents would be considered a good thing if you are taking it easy in the winter.

There are some nicer looking ones than in those pics, the RED ones are cool, also the Bern Helmets, makes a change from the birdnest as those of us who wear these ones wouldnt be seen dead wearing a birdnest one (no offense) and they are also super safe, I have a Bern Watts EPS Matt Carbon and you dont get a lot safer.

Never used it for hard riding, wear it to shows. I have another one I wear and its fine. I only ride 2 cruiser bikes (not at the same time of course) and they suit my needs as I dont ride miles and miles, about 5 miles each time on a long trip

I think the technical term is "piss pot" - more protection, but your head will be at 3 million degrees.

My wife bought one to replace the perfectly good Specialized one I bought her because "it looks better".
Not that she actually wears either of them now as they "mess up here hair".
Now the kids protest that they couldn't wear theirs as mummy doesn't wear hers. *sigh*
Anyway, back to the piss pots. All I can think of them when I see them is the Wyle E Coyote cartoon when he gets a human cannonball set.
