Stop over in Dubai
Discussion
We'll be stopping over in Dubai for 3 or 4 days (altho' this is flexible) in mid Jan. This is not a place we know much about so any suggestions re where to stay and what to see would be greatly appreciated (we're both in our mid 50's so no clubs please!). Looking on the web there are some very expensive hotels and some cheapy ones I guess we sit somewhere in-between! Thanks in advance.
If you want relaxing, no better place than the Hatta Fort Lodge, out in the Hajja mountains.

Excellent food, good wine. Calm, serene, and stunning scenery.

Dubai stretches out for miles so it helps to know what you are looking to do and then find a place in the area that suits.
The main beach hotels are actually about 30kms from the airport and are mostly 5 stars though there is a bit of variation. You could also stay in the older part of town town but the hotels there are older and the cheaper ones can be really nasty.
Any of the Jumeriah group hotels, Ritz Carlton, Royal Mirage etc are going to be pricey but fantastic, there are other options in the marina area though that might be worth a look, Sofitel, Raddison Hilton, Sheraton all are more reasonable cost wise.
Personally I would avoid the Palm as it is actually miles to get there and back and traffic can be sketchy, this rules out Atlantis, Kempinski and a few others .
depending on budget there are a few Ibis and holiday inn express properties that are interesting but obviously not on the beach.
Taxis are cheap and plentiful so location is really only whether you want to be on the beach or a golf course rather than what part of town you end up in.
Happy to comment if you have any properties in mind, it is peak season but hotels here are generally reasonable value and rooms tend to be huge.

Hatta Fort is ok, bit dated and very far out. I would personally opt to stay in Dubai near the beach with all the attractions within close proximity.
One & Only Royal Mirage is the best hotel in my opinion, but at the top range price wise. Westin is a tad more reasonable and located right on the beach. I would also recommend the Grosvenor House hotel in Dubai Marina with it's own shuttle bus to the beach (5 minutes) - current rate aprox AED 800 per night via UK travel agent.
All 3 hotels above will exceed your expectations.
PM me if you need more information.

800AED seems a steal for the grosvenor.
the marina/jumeirah beach hotels are about 30min drive from the airport but no more than a tenner fare. personally i think it's a much better holiday base than the top end of town [DFC / trade centre area]. as it's a 'trendy' area for residential expats and tourists alike there is a much more relaxed atmosphere and an excellent range of restaurants.

Do you like luxury? Shopping? water parks? Top end restaurants? Renting a car and touring around? Just sitting by the pool with a cocktail? Dubai has hotels for all these things, it depends on what you are looking for.
Somewhere like the Atlantis looks pricey, and will be full of families, but you save on the watermark admission fee. Same for the Jumeriah Beach Hotel (Wild Wadi). Some hotels are miles from anything interesting (Hilton RAK, Hatta Fort).
If you're up for it you could spend a couple of nights in Musandam and a couple in Dubai. It all depends on what you want :-)
As has been said, avoid 'downtown' hotels - they'll probably have more guests who will stare at your wife's tits.
