Looking to book honeymoon for July.

Want to go for at least 10 days but preferably 2 weeks.

So far most quotes have come back between £3.5-£4k.

Don't really want to go overboard as we will be having the honeymoon mostly paid for by wedding gifts and thinking that I would feel more comfortable if it was costing around £2k.

Really don't want to come home to debt after the wedding when it could have been avoided.

I would be quite happy with a stay in the lakes or Cornwall but OH thinks it should be something fancy and a once in a lifetime thing.

Is this possible for £2k?

I looked at renting a villa in Italy, but just the rental was coming in massively over budget.

Haven't travelled a lot in the past so don't really know what's good and what's not

Try and looking at "European" places like Greece and Morocco, there are some seriously nice places out there that would qualify as "fancy" and you'll have more chance of getting within budget.

Tell the OH that the destination shouldn't be the most important thing about the honeymoon. My wife and I were sling when we got married so 10 days in cornwall was all we could afford. It was fantastic. Not once did we wish we were anywhere else. Look on owners direct for bargain villas and hunt the budget airlines for flights.

£2000 will get you a very nice 2 week holiday, although you'll probably be staying in Europe.

Have a look on Owners Direct they have thousands of villas to give you an idea.

Morocco is in Africa? biggrin

Is the 2k just to cover the cost of flights and accommodation? I think you should be able to get something very nice with Europe and would agree Owners Direct is very good for that sort of thing. With a good deal I think 2k would get you a good standard of hotel in the Caribbean (Dominican Republic) AI for a fortnight if you just want to chill out and catch some rays. It was a few years back but I paid £800pp AI in a 4* hotel in the Dom Rep and it was spot on.

As above places like the Dominican Republic will provide a 4* all inclusive for 2 weeks including flights for £2000, you'll struggle to get anywhere else in the Caribbean for that though.

Thanks for the suggestions. Been regulary looking on owners direct for places in Italy, but for anything with a pool it costs a fortune and would easily be £2k for self catering accommodation only. Once I factor in food, flights, car hire I could have just gone 5* luxury to Mexico all inclusive!

Shocking how expensive Italy is. Don't really like Spain and done France to death. Greece has never excited me, same with morocco unfortunately.

Heard good things about Dominican republic do will take a look at that.

How about all inclusive in Egypt? Get well fed and looked after. Take a look at Taba Heights

Hence the "European" instead of just European but for some reason a lot of travel agents seem ti junk it in with Europe, hell, Easyjet even there these days!

Go either close to home, or further afield.

2k in most of Asia, or some of the Pacific Islands will get you 5* everything.

This may sound absurd, but how about Maldives: http://www.kuredu.com/ . If you do, GO ALL INCLUSIVE (costs a fortune otherwise). Should be able to squeak in under £2k if you shop around a bit.

Otherwise, how about Canada or USA - cheap flights, cheap hotels, cheap food.

We've just come back from a month in Canada and it isn't extortionate if you're careful. Also, we honeymooned in Vegas (actually, did 2 weeks Vegas -> Bryce Canyon -> Monument -> Grand Canyon -> Vegas). Book Vegas mid-week and do the other bits at the weekend for decent hotel rates.

We are in the same situation here, looking to spend just under 2k each. Looked at Mexico and Sri Lanka. Wanted to do Brasil but its so pricey, no way!

Dominican would get my vote with that budget.

Got married out there a few years back, stayed at the Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus, lovely hotel and still rated No1 on trip advisor. Not sure what it's like outside of the complex as just sat on beach/pool drinking coco-locos for 2 weeks. Never been one for day trips, they suck!

Food was great, plenty of choice, nice exclusive feeling hotel, main lobby stunning, rooms great, private beach with lighthouse converted in to a bar. It was a capacity but it felt very quiet, lots of space. One tip I picked up before I went is to ask for a corner room when checking in, slightly bigger rooms and massive balcony.

I recommended the place to friends and family who went out the year after, they equally loved the place.

Just re-read the OP and I think I see the problem:

July= summer holidays = travel agents jack the prices up to annoy parents of school age kids.

Any chance of waiting until September? Should be a lot cheaper then - if need be treat her to a couple of nights In the compleat angler or similar straight after wedding?

You also haven't told us what sort of holiday you fancy. Choices are:

1. Beach / eat / drink
2. City break
3. Fly drive
4. Activity (scuba / mountain climbing / parascending into a Chilean volcano)

Of course, with it being a honeymoon, I suggest you overlay all of those with a healthy amount of unprotected sex - otherwise you'll get grief off the grandparents to be :sigh

Just dont go in school holidays easy to get a decent villa or all inclusive. Don't tell me your teachers?

Why not do a house swap.

If you are after sunshine, pool and a few things to go see.

Check out Luxor , Egypt.

Hotels are good , weather fantastic , Airport in Luxor is only a 15 minute transfer to everywhere - but there is not much to do outside the hotels though, a few cheap restaurants and a couple of little bars.

Take a boat on the Nile , we did this every couple of days around sunset with the same local boat owner - barter hard and it was cheap.

Valley of the Kings for a bit of history.....just don't arrange in the hotel , go to the little tour operators outside the hotel , way cheaper than an organised trip....just barter hard once again !

Balloon trip over the Nile , we arranged ourselves - just bartered hard with a tour operator outside the hotel, i think we paid less than £20 each in 2008 instead of the advertised price in the hotels which was £60 per person which people in our Balloon had paid.

Good luck with whatever you do......
