Also in the Mail, an article stating that the Traffic Police - who are as we all know expert drivers, manage to kill 24 civilians in one year. This does not surprise me, in my area a few months ago they managed to crash 5 yes 5 police cars in one incident. Seems the met were chasing a stolen car early one morning and found themselves on the Marlow by-pass. The kids ran off into some fields and the plod all bashed into one another as they stopped in the middle of the road to give chase on foot! Several offices were suspended from traffic duties. Ho hum...

As a further point, isn`t that 20% up on last year or something.. With all those lower speed limits up everywhere, are they crashing into the back of people or what !?!?

Portsmouth plod did the same when they aquired new beemers (3 or 5 series) for their unmarked duties. 3 cars were wrecked, in single car accidents! Dr C

I had heard that when a force got hold of some Escort Cossies they were all written off within weeks. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Why do the public make such a fuss when we write off a few cars?
Because we end up paying for them through taxes or unneeded speed traps used to raise revenue.

Well lets just think about it, Traffic cops must be the ultimate petrol heads really, imagine the job application form: Must be willing to drive high performance company cars (T5/Impetza) Drive fast when ever the fancy takes them. Someone else picks up the tab for petrol/servicing etc. Imune to speed traps. Just don't fancy the dead bodies out of crashed cars bit, arh well back to office it is then.

Ron Jobson nice one! GMP had the biggest fleet of cossies, no they didn't write them all off though. I enjoy the job it does have its up's and down's, We ain't got any imprezza's though. They were evaluated and we all liked them but for several reasons, one possibly being the bad press if we stuffed it we didn't get them. At the moment it's T5's Mondeo V6's and Omega's. If you all think it's so much fun though why not join? as long as you are under 45 ish there's nothing stopping you. The accident rate considering what we do is not too bad but then there's always room for improvement. At my traffic unit it's 4years since a car was written off and appart from that only a handful of minor prangs (non by me of course that's tempting fate though)

Are the cars tweaked above standard John like the Rovers were... ?

I wish they were tweaked a bit but unfortunatly these days that is just another urban myth. The only tweak I remember them ever doing to a rover was to fit upgraded brakes to the 827's in an attempt to get them to stop, there were quite a few near misses in persuits when cars suffered brake fade. As far as the Mondeo's go Ford were generous enough to supply them with 205/50 x 16" ally wheels + tyres at no extra cost to us, but our transport dept sent them all back and insisted in having 195/60 x 15" steel wheels , cos the tyres were cheaper, still it cost a fortune as we keep loosing wheel trims at £20 a time, at the moment they are arguing with Vauxhall about getting steel wheels for the new Omega's, but the biggest they can get are 15" and the cars come as standard with 17" ally's, but thats the trouble when you give so civvy jobsworth a budget to play with, they don't want to spend it.
