Holidaying in Brazil

I'm flying into rio for new years with my wife, staying in rio for 3 days then have 3 days to play with before having to get to sao paulo for a friend's wedding. Firstly, can anyone please suggest any luxurious resorts along the way/places or trips not to miss in or near sao paulo. Secondly, what is the best way to travel - hire a car? train? internal flight?

Any other useful tips or information on holidaying in Brazil would be very welcome.
