ex pat coming home ???

hi,
my mother and father in law have lived in paphos cyprus for the past 4 years in rented accommodation, they have the savings they left with of around 80k.
they are coming home, well my mum in law is home but in a different county so we will not see her till next week.
my sister in law rang last night and was shocked by the weight she had lost in the past 4 months since she was last in the uk.
in turns out she has been suffering severe diarrhoea
my question is how would we advise her how to get treatment.
does she register with a doctor or go straight to the hospital.
i believe she may be very ill and has hidden it or is in denial.
i mentioned her money situation as she will also need housing etc, how does that work.
they had always owned there own very modest small house and have not had a council property for 30 years.
there are many questions i need to ask but maybe just see what the response here is first.
her age is 70 and he is 65.
he receives a fairly good london underground pension.
i really can do without a lecture on people that clear off shouldnt get no help, i would at times agree with this but they have been full tax payers there whole working lives and have never had need to claim or ask for government assistance of any type, plus the fact the uk seems quite willing to house and help every other nations people with there plight.
any advise will be really helpful.

I have just been through exactly this with an elderley relative coming back from Spain, very thin, poorly and skint.
First thing you need to do is get them registered with the GP local to where they will be. Then make sure you have got their NHS card with NHS number. If she needs hospital these two things will make it easier with the admin.
Get the old dear into the GP for a through look over, make sure you are with them.
There might be an issue with funding for healthcare having been abroad, but once registered and with health card it should be fine. If they are difficult at the hospital give them a verbal roasting, they soon back down!

Having moved back to the UK myself in 2002, after 12 years overseas, and with a new wife and daughter in tow, and later brought the wifes mum over, none of us had no problem getting registered with GPs or hospitals. In fact they seemed more than eager to get us sorted and registered.

this has been going on for some it seems.
they paid for a scan in cyprus which showed nothing, but she was advised to have a camera put up her backside which she was waiting for under the cypriot NHS, 80K in the bank and hasnt just paid to have it done FFS.
thanks anyway guys i just wanted a bit of reassurance really about if they would treat here or not, and it seems they will.

sorry to hear that. Some good advice there. I dont think anyone will mind an ex-pat asking for NHS treatment after all the tax they paid working here...

I've lived and worked in many places in my life, and honestly, the UK is not the shytehole most non-travelled Brits make out it is. (but we really could do without them moaning about how everything is "better out there", and how bad things are here!!!
)Spend a couple of years living in countries with no NHS, no workable legal system, corrupt cops, no welfare system, no 999 or 911 to call, and your average whining Brit would be running home to GB, to get a pint, a plate of fish and chips and a game of footie on the TV.
they have really enjoyed there time out there, they come home twice a year.
the health care out there sounds ok until something a little more serious comes along.
im not sure why she wants to come home they have lots of friends and are quite into bowling.
she is not saying the illness is bringing her home, in fact she has never really mentioned it, we only found out from the father in law when we phoned to tell him she had arrived in the uk safely and the sister in law was freaked at the weight she had lost.
to be fair she did need to chuck some weight but maybe not to the degree she has.
my wife yaps on all the time about getting a villa or appt in turkey, there is no way on earth i would live in turkey for all the reasons the last poster made.
there is plenty wrong here but there are a lot worse places to live.
