Nikon 24-70mm f2.8

Hi all,

Apologies for another lens question. After a thread I started recently about a new lens for my D300s, the Nikon 24-70 f2.8 lens came very highly recommended.
Im starting to look into one now (trying to find one at a good price..) The only thing is I have read that its an FX lens. The D300s is a DX. Will it still be ok to use with it?

It will work absolutely fine and give you stunning photos. The only thing to note is that due to the focal length multiplier of the smaller sensor the lens' equivalent focal length will be 36-105mm. Which is great for the long end but if you were also keen to use it a lot at the widest end then that may be off-putting.

Absolutely - the DX sensor will simply take the best part of the image so your distortion, CA etc is effectively zero.

ETA - with the 1.5 caveat as just mentioned by another insomniac. If you think 24mm on a DX sensor isn't wide enough then go for the 17-55mm f2.8 (my workhorse lens).

Glad to hear it will work ok. I was just making sure before I thought about taking the plunge..

It should be ok regarding the wideness. It will be mainly used for star photography, and more general use that my 55-300 has trouble with.

You'll love it I run mine on a D300s

If you are into stars you will eventually end up buying a 10-20mm of one type or another though!

Best lens I've used on my D300! Optically and handling wise.

Get a Tokina ATX 11-16 2.8 to match it at the wide end.
