Chatel in the Portes du Soleil. Chatel's a nice village with some great restaurants though not great for choice of bars when I went there.....used to be very reasonably priced. Gives you access to the Portes du Soleil which is a massive ski area. Chatel itself it lowish so if it's a porr winter it's not great but it links very well with Avoriaz which is high enough.

I'd agree on this. This was my favourite skiing area when we stayed in Morzine, and seemed nicely off the beaten track away from the main Avoriaz bit which I didn't like at all. There's a lot of skiing to be done even in this small part of the Portes Du Soleil and it's very pretty. Close to Geneva too. However, if I was looking for something like this I'd be considering Austria. There's a thread or two on here about family friendly small, atmospheric Austrian resorts, which seem to be the "real deal".
