Just spotted this.

The crew of an Italian cargo ship hijacked by Somali pirates has been freed by British special forces, Italy's defence ministry has said.

Eleven pirates were captured after the rescue operation, the ministry added.

Pirates attacked the Montecristo vessel carrying 23 crew members - seven Italians, six Ukranians and 10 Indians - on Monday.

The foreign ministry has expressed great satisfaction in the operation and extended thanks to the British Navy for its role.

Pirates flourish off largely lawless Somalia by attacking passing ships, taking hostages and demanding ransoms to free them and the vessels.

Aye, very lucky. If the US SF had got involved they might've started lobbing grenades through windows and hoping for the best again. . . . . biggrin

Did the article miss out the part where the pirates were thrown over the side and left for the sharks?

Or have I had too much coffee again?

That would be brutal and so un-EU-like. BTW, I have heard that the EU has banned children under 8 years old from blowing up balloons as they are a choking hazard. Is this true?

This is insane; honestly, where does it end? I am starting another thread on this, I must hear others' input.

Maybe there should be a new rule that captured pirates can join the Navy (doing the worst of jobs therein) or face the plank.

The BBC report just says a fleet auxilary ship went to help along with an American frigate. Doesn't say UK special forces did this or anything other than 1 ship go to help.

They have to release them, it's that or they claim asylum and you and I pay for it. Marvellous huh?
