Hi all,

Just bought a Porsche cayenne turbo s to take over the family winter duties from the BMW X.

So, first question is what would be the best winter / snow tyre for the standard 20" wheels. Current tyres are 275/40 x 20"

I live in NE Scotland and the car will get driven in deep snow and minir off road (farm access etc etc) quite often over the next few months.

Any ideas?
I used the vredestein guigaros on the BMW which worked well, but I'm not sure they are suited to the cayenne?

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!

Cheers
Ian

Only Pirelli make N rated Winter tyres in that size (IIRC).

I use Vredestein Wintrac4 Xtreme on my Touareg with great results. These are also available in your size if you don't mind non N rated tyres. I've used them all year round, 22K miles over 16 months and still with 4mm+ of tread on all four.

Cheers guys,

Will look into both, the Porsche list shows pirelli scorpion ice and snow, so will get prices on those.

Is it best to stick to exactly the same sizes? I'm planning in using the same rims and just swapping them over every year.

Cheers

I would on this car, seeing as the correct size is available.

These two companies always offer good prices:

just bought 4 Vredesteins from Tyremen - more than £50 per corner cheaper than anywhere else that I could find - they only had ,30 left in stock last Thursday - most other companies quoting mid-Nov delivery though.

Any experiences of a decent tyre in the 21inch for these? Just been caught short with old Pirelli Rossos and need to order some replacements ASAP, suggestions welcome or should I just replace with like for like?

Cheers

Guessing I'll need some winter wheels too then. What size rims were you running?

I would suggest 19" the 18" are best but will look too flimsy on a turbo.

Will the 18/19s even fit (given the brake setup) ?

go for the smallest rims that will fit over the calipers - your manual will tell you which are suitable.
then choose the appropriate tyre size - again this is in the manual.

My KN runs 295/35/21 summer tyres, and 255/55/18 winters

big sidewall is a plus in snow - you cannot see much tarmac / kerb under snow !

I've run Pirellis scorpion snow & ice for 3 years now, firstly on a KN turbo, now on my hybrid;
love em.

Spooky thing is, every year, without fail, 3 days after I fit them, it snows....

The Turbo comes with 18" wheels as standard doesn't it? I know nearly all have upgraded ones fitted, but for winter use I can see how the smaller ones may be better. The first Turbo I had came with 20" summers and 17" winters I think (may have been 18" though), all as supplied from new by Porsche.

My Cayenne had 19" wheels but for winter I bought 20" ones, purely because I'd bought a set of nearly-new Michelin winter tyres via eBay from someone on here who emigrated to Australia in May/June time (I didn't even have a car for them at the time but they were just so cheap due to the time of year they were worth buying anyway). I haven't really tested them yet but I'm sure they'll be fine. However, starting from scratch I'd have bought 255 (rather than the standard 275) tyres for the 19" rims, as for snow the narrower tyre would be better, or looked for a set of smaller wheels & winter tyres.
