I'm certain this thread has been done a few times already.
almost certainly, it's a natural thing to ask. Maybe a sticky for people to brag over max speeds/average speeds/general stats?
To answer the OP, on my shiny road bike also just above 40. To my shame, I've gone faster on a cheap halfords mtb (speedo said 49.5 afterwards
, it was a crap speedo but tended to under- rather than over- read), in a fair amount of traffic, with a suspect rear brake (better than a suspect front brake, right?)... I'm not sure I'll ever beat that, at least not on that hill, I'm I once saw 70kph on a steep and straight local road with a good surface then bottled it and applied the anchors
I spent weeks building up to it and only did it to say that I had
50kph is comfortable
60kph is faaaast
70 was too fast
And if we're doing willy waving Ive just looked at my stats for a 40km descent off Galibier on closed roads last summer
I maxed out at 65kph and spent most of it around 50

Cheers!
The other week I hit 44.2mph in Macclesfield Forest, but it was the first time I'd ridden this particular hill in about 20 years so I was a bit cautious! Next time I should be able to top 50, although it's a bit sketchy as it's only about 10' wide and has a light spreading of gravel down the middle
Actually looking at my Garmin data I've topped 40mph four times in my last 11 rides.

53 mph down Telegraph Hill in Devon.
51.6 mph on that big downhill coming into Brighton on this years L2B. Swerni mnanaged 51.5 mph on the same day.
For me, it's 0.1 mph. For him, it's a whole year.
Could easily be a badly calibrated speedo making the difference at those speeds.51.6 mph on that big downhill coming into Brighton on this years L2B. Swerni mnanaged 51.5 mph on the same day.

See I never breached 45 that day, no idea why? I thought there was a headwind, but obviously not if you boys managed those speeds!51.6 mph on that big downhill coming into Brighton on this years L2B. Swerni mnanaged 51.5 mph on the same day.

I find gunning down any reasonable hill will get to 60km/h pretty easily...
Fastest? On the road bike, L2B same hill as the rest and over 50mph... just....
Amazing to play with aero positions at that speed and see just how much difference it makes, also how little a max speed run changes your overall average speed on the ride which is what counts

56mph down the new Weymouth relief road just after it opened (but the new cycle paths hadn't) albeit on a heavy recumbent (so all the aero advantage of a TT bike plus the weight of a MTB) Could have gone faster but had rather large flappy jacket on and marker flag, both of which rob speed.
Must admit I don't have the balls to go back and try for 60 :-( Its too fast when not wearing leathers IMO.

53.2mph coming down into Stockbridge in a race last month - felt faster as the road surface was awful.

Respec'!
52.something on a large hill in France. I based my rides on finishing on this long hill to try and get faster every day

:O that takes some cahoonas my dad had a recumbent for a bit and I'd be a bit worried at 30 let alone nigh on double always felt like i wasn't sure the steering was going to stop turning when i wanted it to Must admit I don't have the balls to go back and try for 60 :-( Its too fast when not wearing leathers IMO.
