I`ve just been scanning through the latest `Classic and Sports Car` magazine - there`s a supplement regarding the investment market for cars inside the publication. They have a top 10 investment buys - and their cut price alternative if you cant afford the real thing. Number 10 is the McLaren F1 which they think is underpriced - and if you can`t afford even a well used one at £1M then the Noble M12 is the best low cost alternative investment....

I guess that would be for an example that's not been modified. Wonder how many of them now exist?

I`m not totally in agreement with that statement. Things like an alloy oil breather catch tank to stop corrosion getting into your oil, a stainless steel twin exhaust system to allow the engine to breathe properley and to do away with corrosion and broken mountings, a wiring upgrade so you don`t risk fuel starvation at high revs as the voltage drop is too high to the fuel pump with the standard harness, are never going to reduce the value of the car. The same probably goes for grooved discs, fitting an M400 gear change mechanism to an older car etc. The long term risk would be things like major body or trim modifications or taking the engine tune too high - but even with that it would depend on what the buyer wants the car for...
If you look at investment cars like E-Types the fitting of alternators to replace the dynamos, Coopercraft brakes, 5 speed synchro gearboxes seem to have no affect on prices and potentially increase them.
To my mind the investment car will be one with A1 chassis condition, perfect body and trim (standard), and whatever mechanical mods are deemed necessary to make the car reliable.
Ducking back down into the trench.......

No need to hide Bob. That's why my car is 'standard' wink

Got to agree with Bob , the Noble has To be the only car with fuel pump wiring upgrade as a STD :-)
We almost have a STD list of upgrades , cars with these upgrades are worth more !!! Ive just had a friend buy a Noble and I advised him to pay extra and buy one with the mods done !!! Tux

must admit I don't care a stuff about long term value... I've had more expensive cars (and faster when my noble was std) nothing else gives me the buzz that the noble does, or the satisfaction that I am able to play and improve the car.
Fact that it holds its value well has turned out to be a surprising bonus.

If I was mega rich, the F1 would be in my garage because I love it... Id use it as well!... wonder if that could take the abuse I give the noble?

It is weird about "standard" vs "non-standard" - do factory design faults count as mods? Would you want a truly standard car?

lol, you know how many times we have had this upgrade vs stock debate, i have always defending upgrades as many know smile.. because they are lots of factory faults.. and i think eventually a stock noble will be a very rare thing...especially with Simon tempting us with upgrades all the time wink.. i'min agreement with Andy and i also did not buy as an investment the fact that they hold their value is just a bonus, even stock Nobles can be confusing, so if you have a 5 speed GTO3 nobody will be any wiser if the upgrade it to 6 speed, mine came from the factory with a 4 port exhaust and i have the original purchase receipt to prove it, so lets just say that all these mods/upgrades were factory fitted smile
