Mr.Sax our big old white cat has been on medcation for a couple of years with an overactive thyroid, with no real results in bringing the condition down, so today he's gone in to have a thyroid removed.

Bit risky for a 13 year old cat, but the vets did recommend it.

Hopefully we'll be able to pick him up this evening, although he won't be happy with one of those cones round his neck.

Anybody else have experience of operations on older cats?

All the best but it's not usually too long an op esp if just one gland more risky if both being removed but that's to do with hormonal control and needing to keep the parathyroid in place you would have been told this if it was relevant to yr cat though. They should do bloods and have him on a drip to help with recovery tbh most animals we ga are older and often in their teens with few problems unless directly linked with their condition not the ga itself.

He may not need a cone as it could rub the wound smile

The waiting is always the hard bit.

Well he appears to be fine, and ready for collection this evening, which is a relief. smile

Did you actually go for the operation?
We have managed to keep our cats condition thyroid down with tablets.
Best of luck - hope he recovers well.

Yeah, he had one out.

He's been on tablets for ages now, but according to the vets he was on one of the highest doseages of tablets of any of the cats they see, which can't be good. After lots of blood tests over possibly two years, it just doesn't seem to be coming down, so an operation was the only thing really.

My Mrs is at home with him and our other cat today, having nightmares trying to keep him in, as he can get a locked cat-flap open. biggrin

Apart from looking like Frankenstein's cat, he looks like he's doing well. smile
