A cat seems to have adopted me, help!
Discussion
As per the title a cat seems to want to live with me, I don't have one and I don't want one.
It's a big black one, massive in fact and has definitely been in the wars. Half eaten ears and a few scars on him. I nearly s
t myself the other night putting rubbish out and it headbutted my leg. It seems to have taken up residence in the garden about 3 days ago and has tried to follow me into the house a couple of times. I haven't fed it and don't intend to, it is clearly far from starvation anyway.
Would prefer not to get the charities involved as it'll end up being put down as nobody would want this beast stalking their house, its like the cat of the Baskervilles.
Any ideas other than me hoping it gets bored and goes away?

You are obviously (contrary to your assertion that you don't want a cat) a nice person, and the cat has decided that you are to the person who will give him shelter, attention and food.
Just get some food and let him in (does he have a collar?). You won't have mice in your house (well, unless he is like Giles, a cat owned by a friend of mine, a cat who watches the dog chase the mice...)..

Seriously though, I really do not want a cat. I really don't think this is a runaway pet either, bar giving me a couple of headbutts it backs off when I go to stroke it.
If it has chosen me it's probably as its next meal, must be half as big again as any other cat I have clapped eyes on. It could well be stalking me now, waiting to pounce if I leave the house.

Could just be a friendly cat that has decided he likes you
Headbutts are a sign of affection, not dinner
Is he meowing at you at all?
If he starts to come every night & the rain has started, consider letting him in & putting a collar on him with a note barrel asking the owner to contact you

Hasn't made a sound so far, couple of headbutts but backs off if I lean down. Seems to be very wary of getting too close. I'm presuming it's a he given the general size and fat skull.
I'm going to try and get a pic next time he appears, maybe stick a poster in the local shop. Starting to think it may have wandered from a nearby farm or something.

be worthwhile getting him scanned for a chip to see if he does have a real home ...
if he's an unsnipped tom or was snipped late he will have grown to proper adult tom size - which is pretty large compared to a snipped tom or or a lady cat snipped or unsnipped

I must be getting soft in my old age, threw a couple of ham slices down the garden. Hopefully it will soon realise that it will not connive its way indoors and go torture someone else.
Not that I don't like cats, ex had a couple and they were handy for keeping my feet warm in the winter. But... I do regularly long shifts or 2/3 days away at a time, not fair on any pet as I live on my own currently.

This is chick magnet story of heroic potential.
"this is the cat" Present pic. "He adopted me"
You could call him Greebo.
Assuming he hasn't a owner. Congrats.
Ham? Ham? Well, that'll make him go away......
Seriously, just let him in, get a cat flap, he will be quite happy, and given it's getting colder and wetter, he's a lot safer in your house than out in the bad weather.
Does sound like he's a little nervous of you though, but once he's in the house just sit in your chair and I suspect he'll come over and sit near you etc..
You know you want a cat, and now you have one. It's all good.
