Ok chaps - since all the rough running and niggles are out and being debated, I thought I'd get mine out and ask for some advice. Happy with my new purchase overall but I'm not convinced the car should remain idling at 1500rpm or just over whilst moving but clutch disengaged and coasting. It keeps idling at this speed until the car physically stops, and then it seems to pick up on the fact its stopped, and drop idle back to around 900. Any thoughts - should it do this or am I right to investigate? I appreciate this could take me down several paths, so I'd appreciate the collective wisdom of this forum before choosing which one to start on. Pete
Start with the stepper motor. Give it a good clean but don't be tempted to replace the sealing washer with a thicker one. I had a similar problem and made it worse by fititng a thick washer. It held the plunger a fraction off the seat and allowed air to bleed trough. My garage spoted the cock-up straight away and just sealed the threads with silicone, no washer at all. Problem solved. I had a lot of other issues as well which produced an erratic tick over but start with this one as it's easy to solve and see if it works.
I believe what you describe is pretty normal from what I remember - mine might have been a tad lower than 1500 but not far off, then as soon as you stop completely it comes down to about 950 or so in a series of steps as the stepper motor increments the speed down.
Personally I wouldn't fiddle with it if its generally OK - the alternative is it stalling when you stop which is a right royal pain in the arse.

If the speed sensor registers the car is moving above 3-5mph then the ECU is programmed to keep the revs at approx 1200. Once the car is below this threshold (and not before) the revs will return to base idle of around 900 or so. This is normal. do not be tempted to try and remove it :-)
Gents - thanks for the replies. I felt it was one to get a sense check on, but it doesn't sound like its massively out of step with the general expectation and experience, albeit perhaps a bit on the high side. Having had the v6 before which didn't do this, I started to worry. If it gets worse i'll whip out the stepper motor and give it a good clean up as suggested being careful with the washer.
