Beware the pedestrians

Stupid idiots walked out in front of me from behind a queue of vans, hit one of them who sent me flying, left me lying on the road and legged it!
Forunately I was out side a nail bar and a team of beauticians looked after me
5 hours later, I'm home with a broken arm at the elbow, a bent bike and some gravel rash..
I smacked my head on the road and I'm grateful that I was wearing my helmet...

Got told to slow down the other day by some idiot who had decided to walk across the road infront of a bike (doing approx 30mph) assuming I was going much slower, I would have come off, but he wouldn't have been walking off

Had one on the Mile End road the other day who jumped so high when he realised that I was coming that he ended up pouring a cup of coffee down his shirt.
That was satisfying.

Like car drivers, cyclists should be looking for people walking out between cars, a cuclists higher position can help see past cars, plus remember bikes are pretty quiet so pedestrians may not hear you. Its all part of defensive riding

I'm not perfect and would probably have hit someone in that situation (with the bike, and maybe again afterwards) but if you can't stop when something unexpected happens you're generally judged to be going too fast for the conditions aren't you?
Ah, I missed that about the right and left.The too fast for the conditions is tricky, if he was unsighted and only doing 5mph he could still have hit them. I would sort of apply the too fast rule as being able to stop within the distance you can see. If someone steps out inside that distance then its no so clear cut.
In London I am a pedestrian and a cyclist occasionally (thanks Boris), certainly as a pedestrian you do not hear bikes and they are often masked by other vehicles, or just blend in so its easy to step in front of them, especially as they often travel quite a bit faster than the traffic, which lulls you into a false sense of security. Unfortunately many cyclists don't take that into account and do ride too fast bearing in mind the risk from pedestrians and other cyclists that don't stop for red lights etc

I was involved in a collision with a cyclist at about 20mph last winter. I'm not a light chap, and went over the top of her, with the bike over the top of me.
She stepped out into the road wearing a coat with a long hood.
I was shaken up and had a small bruise on my leg. She went to hospital in an ambulance, and I think she had torn a ligament.
on that instance, I was lucky and she wasn't. It could quite easily have gone the other way, as the OP has demonstrated.
I hope you broke your "non-wiping" arm.

True, but in a busy and noisy city cyclists can be hard to see. Your judgement is affected if you see traffic crawling along at 8mph, you tend not to notice the cyclist filtering who is doing 20mph.I am reasonably alert, i don't walk with an ipod or similar plugged in, I always look but have still missed seeing cyclists. A bit like the way car drivers often don't spot motorcyclists.
To this end cyclists need to be wary by parked cars and vans as do pedestrians. The responsibilities on the cyclist ahould be the same as those on the a driver.

The problem I have, is that 95% of pedestrians in central London don't even bother to look (sometimes through complacency, others through sheer ignorance), I can almost understand those who walk between cars sat in traffic and only look left, not expecting bikes to be filtering down the middle of the road but I've also come across a lot who don't even bother to look and these are the ones that annoy me.
I have a left turn into a road just outside work, if I were to carry more speed, I'd have a very close to 100% hit rate - fortunately for them (and me), I know they're not going to look so slow down a lot more than I usually would and pick a few choice words instead
The woman this morning didn't even turn around to acknowledge me even once I'd stopped right next to her

And I pay the fking taxes to maintain the roads and have pedestrian crossings every 100m.
IF a few car drivers start filming with cameras and get let off for hitting stupid ignorant predestrians...the culture will change. It has got worse in the last 5 yrs or so.
