Did i make the right decision buying a Canon 550D??

Just bought my first DSLR, and based on a recommendation from a friend, I went for the Canon 550D. I've had it for about 3 weeks now and the photos I have taken have been great in my opinion. The thing is, I have nothing to compare it to as it is my first SLR.

Although it doesn't really make any difference now, should i have bought the Nikon 5100 instead as that seems to get better reviews and is a similar price?

There is very little between comparable Nikon and Canon models at this level but most people find they get on better with one than the other. If the Canon suits then great, get on and enjoy it, they are a great camera.

As you say yourself - the photo's you've taken with it have been great. What else is there to say and why would changing brands make any difference.

There are very few, if any, wrong choices in the DSLR market. The lens you stick in front of the camera and your own skills in operating it will make a vastly bigger difference to the quality of your pictures than any other factors. Just enjoy it and learn as much as you can.

According to the thread I linked to, post-processing is just as important as the things you mentioned.

No (in answer to your question), you made completely the wrong decision in my opinion.

However I can help you. I have a lot of crappy Canon gear and have been thinking about buying some more. It's a cognitive dissonance thing ... I'll offer you 30% of what you paid for the 550D. Cash. Then you can buy the Nikon and you will be happy and I will be lumbered with some rubbish that probably best fits my photographic inability.

good purchase mate, its a great camera, let me know if you want some examples of photos with it, i have had mine since Xmas and i love it

I have a 450d and it is far better than I am. All my pics are better than the old snapper. As per Indiana Jones "you have chosen well"

Genuinely wouldn't be concerned

You get along with the way the camera works and you get shots you like, that's what's important.

Both nikon and canon camera systems have a multitude of lenses and accessories available. If you want, they will allow you to buy kit that will work with your camera if you decide to start taking pictures of anything from macro shots of plants to animals on safari

Sounds like you have a simple case of buyers remorse. Get out there, take loads of pictures, spend stupid amounts of money on extras and enjoy. One other thing stop reading reviews.

Funnily enough, i did use it to take some photos of animals at Longleat Safari Park, and even with my lack of knowledge and lenses, i was pretty pleased with the photos!
