underwater camera (2nd time)

ok, posted this thread yeterday and my iphone started 2 threads and both seem to have been removed...

so, i'm off diving for a week soon and i want to get a reasonable digital waterproof camera, i dont want anything too expensive, i wont be going again for another year so i dont want to spend masses.

i've seen the "waterproof" bags on ebay and the like but i'm very unhappy about putting my ixus into a plastic bag then going underwater with it.

anyone with any recommendations please feel free to let me know.

Buy a housing for your Ixus, not a stand alone underwater camera. Cheaper and more useful to you in the long run.

I've used a ditigal ixus in a waterproof bag before and it was fine for snorkling. (I did test it thoroughly first of course.)

What kind of diving will you be doing, and how deep?

As Zod says, do NOT use a plastic bag jobby. They're fine for taking photos of your todger in the bath, and that's about it.

Can't believe this but I have this sitting on my desk that I was just about to put on e-bay.

It goes with an IXUS but can't remember which one it's a Canon WP-DC800 waterproof case.

Let me know if it suits.

i think mines an ixus 70 - but i'll check at lunchtime. how will i know if its the right one? shirley they cant be totally model specific?

mostly snorkelling and dives at no more than 10m

I can recomend the Fuji F50 (probably pick a second hand one up off ebay pretty cheap now) just get a casing for it. I would also get a white underwater slate aswell so you can reset the white balance (as you have probably noticed with a lot of underwater photos they are very blue, resetting the white balance helps to avoid this).

When choosing a camera make sure you can change the apeture and the shutter speed, if you want to get some half decent pictures. If you don't already know how to take pictures underwater I would recommend getting a few lessons or reading up on it aswell.

Hire from your dive operator - they're usually very cheap to rent for a few days, and usually more cost-effective if you only need it for a week a year.

Seeing something I don't need on PH, but 'Want', failed in turning in to a Purhcase.

Yeah, sometimes I think that buying a waterproof camera would be better. Problem is, though, that I suspect they may not go to the same depths as the expensive cases. Just guessing though.

thats exactly what i thought. the pain is that they dont seem to sell the one i need because my ixus is an older model.

tbh i would have been happy spending £100 on a camera or case but now i'll look into hiring one.

still want to buy something snazzy though!!!

I've always been a fan of the Pentax waterproof cameras, I've previously had a WPi and a W60 [sold to fund newer models].

I've currently got a W90 [12Mp photos, 5x optical zoom, HD video, waterproof to 6M [20ft) and shock [drop] proof to 1.2M]. Used it snorkelling in Turkey and all summer at the beach here and it performed brilliantly.

Got sand on the lens, just give it a swill in the sea, fantastic.

There's a new one just released from them, the WG-1 which has similar specs to the W90, but with 14Mp and waterproof to 10M [33ft].

It's on amazon for £205 all in link HERE and I'm very tempted.

I looked at the Olympus tough et al and the Pentax just stood out at me.

I bought the housing first....cameras underwater were selling old housings for c-5000 for £15 each, I then bought the camera second hand for £36 on ebay.
