o2 sensor in our Forester 2.5XT is on the fritz, I've been quoted £600 for the part! yikes

Anyone know of a good, read cheaper, source than Subaru?

I've seen £40 universal parts on ebay but not really keen...

In the past I'd found that the generic O2 sensors made by the same manufacturer as produce the OEM part tend to work well on any given car, so when I needed one for my Legacy I checked and it was a Bosch sensor - so I bought a 4 wire universal Bosch sensor and it had the same part number on the sensor itself as the Subaru one I took off the car! Basically Subaru wanted £100 for the connector they put on the end of the wires...

At £600 it sounds like it might be a wide band sensor or something else a bit weird though, so finding an equivalent part might not be so easy.

It won't be wideband, just a standard zirconia sensor. Can't remember exactly but it should be a three wire jobbie and for the difference in money I'd go for a universal. You need to be careful with the connections as the wire is stainless and can't be soldered.

Correct about being careful but think the wire is titanium. It should still twist and a bit of heat shrink would be a good idea.

I was in the same position a few years ago - quoted £300 + just for the part. I got a pattern one for £40 and all was well. Subaru really do take the piss.

Hopfully you have it sorted now, but if it is the rear sensor the part number is 22690AA520

Mmm, thanks.

No it's not sorted but the car is running fien and passed MOT.

One oddity though. The specialist told me it was an o2 sensor and showed me the part that needed replacement, in the engine bay (I'll post a photo tomorrow). Another mechanic told me that no way was that particular sensor an o2 sensor, it was something else, probably an egr valve.

So I'm back to square one banghead
