I'll start this post by apologising for my ignorance on the subject.

Am i right in thinking that the same cars/teams that compete in the Le Mans 24hr also compete throughout the year? Does this make Le Mans an independent race as i always thought, or are there points to be scored at Le Mans that go towards a championship?
Do the drivers that race at le mans also race the same car/team throughout the year, whats the deal with Amanda Stretton's team, they didn't race at the 24hr this year, but do they race at all?

Also what is the Le Mans 1000km?

The LMP1/2 class cars run in the ALMS series but Le Mans is not part of it. It is a seperate race this year and so no points go towards a championship. Other cars like the GTS Ferrari's and Corvettes, GT Porsches etc... also race in other GT classes in the ALMS and also European FIA GT series.

Amanda Stretton was at Le Mans this year but not driving she was a pit reporter for Speed TV.

The Le Mans 1000km is just another endurance race, using the shorter Bugatti circuir IIRC at Le Mans. Same car types/teams drivers that take part at Le mans, if they are available and willing to drive. Was in November last year. The Audi Sport Japan Team Goh Audi R8 of Seji Ara and Tom Kristensen won it. (Le Mans 24hr 2004 winners)

Amanda's team was there, but the all-woman crew plan fell through. Her partner, Bob Berridge, is a very big part of the Synergy TVR team that raced there yesterday.

As far as seeing the cars outside of Le Mans goes, come to Silverstone on the 14th of August to see the British round of the LMES (Le Mans Endurance Series), which has been specifically created to give the cars more than one race in Europe every year. It's a four-round series (Monza/Nurburgring (the new one, sadly)/Silverstone/Le Mans Bugatti (or Spa - can't remember...)) and most of the teams from Le Mans race in it - Veloqx Audi, Goh Audi (who won), Rollcentre Dallara, Pescarolo etc, along with top players in the smaller classes and a few real stars that didn't make it through Le Mans eccentric selection process.

Silverstone will be a Saturday evening race into dusk, so the spirit of Le Mans will be there, to a degree. Problem is the spectators probably won't be there in such huge numbers... It will be a really spectacular race, though. Oh and the British GTs will be the warm-up event!

GT cars have their own championship - the FIA GT Championship. It's on Eurosport as part of their 'Super Racing Weekend' package and will be at Donington Park circuit on the 26th/27th of this month.

Hope that helps a little.
