My Spanish housemate has been introduced to gravies and sauces like HP since moving to England and he likes them. No issues there, that's fairly normal.

Last night he decided to make gravy for a piece of fried fish (another thread right there). So he bought some instant gravy (first mistake). He pours some powder into a glass and then puts some water in and throws it into the microwave for a couple of minutes. It turns out that it's quite important to stir them together first, otherwise the gravy powder hardens into a crystal like substance at the bottom of the glass.

It's still soaking.

Suddenly I feel competent.

So pouring on boiling water and stirring as per instructions wasn't an option?

(Actually being Spanish maybe he couldn't read the instructions)

Gravy on fish??!??!?

The simple mistake he made was to believe the nonsense on the packet that granules can ever make gravy. Gravy is made from thickened cooking juices, vile synthetic crap is made from granules.

I saw an old housemate 'cook' twice in the 3 or so years I lived with him:

1st time: Beans on Toast... Bread in toaster for 20 seconds, cold beans tipped onto warmed bread, mixture placed in microwave for several minutes, resulting in molten beans on soggy nuclear-heated (for a moment I thought he was trying to create a new element) bread.

2nd time: Spaghetti (didn't get as far as seeing with what)... Spaghetti dumped in small cold pan of water, gas hob set on full, spaghetti caught fire... Turned gas off, opened window and went to KFC whilst waiting for smoke to clear...

Very intelligent bloke, mid 30s, company director (infact he's probably lurking on PH looking at his credentials - sorry mate biggrin)!

Yes that reminds me that my housemates also seem to only use the dual-ring gas burner even with the 8-inch frying pan. Great for heating the kitchen up and burning your food on the outside!

Yup...

For the first time in my life I'm in a position where I'm single and could afford to splash my hard-earned on a nice motor and a few other luxuries, but nope... instead I choose to live on my own and be poorer than I have been in years, largely so that I can keep a nice set of knives that are not abused to lever open tins (why not use the tin-opener FFS?), have ladies round for dinner without them walking into a house stinking of burnt food and chip fat, and not have to re-season my wok every time I want to rustle up a quick supper!
